Games with epic atmosphere

Alan Wake! - One of the best if you want that kind of thing.

The latest Tomb Raider was also surprisingly good. Not really the classic Tomb Raider vibe but the story and graphics make up for that. There is a part where you climb a huge ariel thing and I actually felt kinda nervous looking down LOL

Gone Home is a good one :D

Also Master Reboot is okay but a bit janky.

Lifeless Planet is awesome for something expansive and different.

FEAR games and Alan Wake for something more higher end on the budget scale.

imo BFBC2 has some of the best audio on any game. Nothing much has touched it since.

I think its more meaty and impressive than BF3 or BF4 which goes for a more sparse crisper and dryer sound, BF3 is more realistic but BFBC2 is more intense and mad.

I used to play this game through full range speakers on a THX-ultra-2-select amp :)

Starwars.

The original atari arcade game circa 1983. Game locks you right in, the speech, control yoke, and it's pure frantic nature.

Still has the same effect on me over 30 years later.

Alien Isolation played with Oculus Rift and some big speakers

Most games in VR really. I haven't played a standard game since getting my DK2 because a flat screen is now boring. Minecraft and Half Life 2 are also excellent in VR

The feeling of being inside a game walking around, moving your head to look around corners, out of windows etc. really makes the game come alive (and obviously add to the atmosphere)

I thoroughly enjoyed playing metro last light, on normal mode its too easy to be scary, its just really great fun to play through, a very very well made game.

I also really rate dishonoured and the bioshock and FEAR series. Although FEAR might freak the OP out a bit too much :D

I really want to play Alien isolation but I'm on a DX10 gpu :( but from what I've heard it's quite traumatically scary!

EDIT: the batman games work great on xbox pad and are well made and good fun too.

Really makes me want!

Its worth it IMO. 960x540 per eye means its not exactly sparkling clear but you dont notice it after playing for a while. There also peripheral vision issues (like wearing a diving mask) but its still a development kit so...

There's also a lot of fun games and simulators to try like roller coasters, shooting lasers from your face and Quake 1 and 2 in VR! Quake really comes alive even though its decades old

I forgot of course, Dark Souls has an amazing atmosphere that is unique in my experience. Pretty sure you've played that though iirc.

It won't test your sound system, as it isn't really done with sound, but the atmosphere in the first game is incredible.
