Ok time to own up.

Who played this game as a youngster? I did. And loved it!

I almost wish it was still socially acceptable to do it now. :D

Any 'losers' still play it now?

What armies did you have?

For Warhammer, I had Undead:

For 40k, Eldar:

And for Necromancer, Delaque:

Games Workshop is a company not a game. They produce 3 main games and have produced many others in their time. You would probably need to be a touch more specific...

i played it when i was 14 but its pretty expensive to play without a job. i played with the lord of the rings ones :p i think ive still got 'em in a shoebox somewhere

You've already massively outed yourself.:D

I collected Eldar for a while, never actually played the game, I just liked the artwork and painting them :o

^ What he said ^

*Except*

GW used to be a proper role play and table top battle store, they used to sell everyone's products, West End Games, Avalon Hill, TSR etc. It used to be an amazing store to visit, a real Aladdin's cave.

White Dwarf magazine was the same, it used to review everyone's games. Now it's just GW focused.

Around 18 years ago the GW stores changed and started selling just Warhammer battle crap.

Such a shame, I have no idea why they chose to change their business model.

According to wikipdia, it was because it was their most profitable.

I even had no idea they actually OWNED White Dwarf. Its like a giant propaganda machine! :)

Yeah I used to. For 40k I started off with an Ork Army (considering you got billions with the box set), then Necrons then Dark Eldar. For WH I collected Undead and Bretonnia.

I just naturally stopped collecting as didn't really have the time money or patience to continue (especially since they kept revising the rules every 2 mins).

Happy days though! :)

Oh yes.

It used to be an amazing magazine as well. I can remember all the amazing reviews etc. I used to love getting it.

I think the switch from magazine to propaganda machine came with the release of Warhammer Fantasy Role Play. They had a 10 page full colour insert and then each month afterwards the AD&D and Paranoia scenarios were nuked in favour of their new baby.

It just went downhill then.

P.S. Not slagging Warhammer FRP BTW - was an amazing game :)

I've contemplated loads of times buying some new miniatures just to paint. I don't think I would play the game again though - I have Dawn of War for that now!

BRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr games workshop.

Used to have an orc orgy until I realised what the hell I was doing at age 14. Sold quite a lot recently as I stocked up on the lead based figures years back as they were discontinuing them.

cor blimey, nerdalert

You are on a forum for overclocking PCs. It isn't really a question of "Are these people nerds?" but more "What degree of nerdism does this person suffer from?"

Fortunately for me, it is a high degree with several nerdy hobbies. :D

There was a kid in our year at School who used to be into this kinda stuff.

We used to beat him daily.

I paint, but i don't play. I have rubbish hands so painting is a good way to focus attention on stability and detail.

My first taste of GW was reading White Dwarf magazines my older brother had. He kept his actual board game on a table in the attic and I wasn't allowed up there. But I would sneak up and stare for ages at the scenery and figures and admire the painting. Then I got old enough and got my own 40k set (Tyranids!). My scenery building was cack and my painting was terrible. I was the only one of my friends who played/collected and the closest store was Belfast, so on weekends I'd trapse down to the store, never bought anything beyond my original game, but I liked looking at all the figures and watching the guys paint. They finally opened a store in Lisburn but eventually as all teens realise, booze and wimmen become important so GW finally fell out of favour. When DoW was released I bought that to get my gaming fix (and all expansions). Although my active playing has waxed and waned, I've always maintained a healthy interest in The Black Library (try and buy a novel every once in a while) and the artwork, which thanks to the internet I have an endless supply of.

I have an:

Entire company of Space Marines
a growing warband of orks about 2000 points

Orge kingdoms army,
Empire army

the onyl one which is painted are the marines :)

play almost every week in my mates loft.

I'd play Warhammer 40k but fairly rarely.
I was more into the painting scene and still have a few old White Dwarf issues at my folks place.

Anyway, I painted Space Marines, Terminators and also had Harlequins too.

oh, was it Space Orks as well? Them too.

I also had a couple of tanks which were pretty cool.

I used to have Space Wolves and Imperial Guards. I used get more from painting the models then playing the game, I still got all the games up in the loft somewhere but probably forgoten how to play them.

Where do kids get the kind of money to play Warhammer, etc.?

I never had the kind of money they expect for the models until I was at least 17 and working part-time. Obviously by that point I was interested in women.
