Now the other thread are great for finding out the performance impact but they don't tell the full story.

You should be looking at is the Image Quality you get from these worth the performance impact?

Lets start with TressFX is the hair change worth it? I would say so.

Is PhysX smoke in Batman worth it? again I would say so even if it is abit over done.

Now back to Gameworks, is things like Godrays worth it? Not a chance.

Here is Farcry 4 Godray on vs off, click link for interactive view.

Fallout 4 Godray Ultra vs Low LOL :D click link for interactive view.

We could do this for all of the GameWorks effects and you will find they do nothing to what we already have in games and are just adding ontop more performance impact for no real gain in IQ..

TreeFX :p haa New one for AMD!

So what you are effectively saying is NVidia effects are not worth it and AMD ones are. Now there's a surprise, I would have never seen that coming. ;)

Righto, IQ it is and this really irks me.

Lara's hair is so sharp it actually cuts through her shoulders and neck. Constantly happening and a real gripe for me.

They aren't testing them wrong, the threads were created only to find out what the performance impact was, people already know the IQ differences if they've played or looked at both...

How many threads do we need on this?

Lara's hair was nice, but it was on one model in the game and still acted rather glitchy and not very realistic in movement at times but you're right at least you could see it without looking for it.

Edit: As Greg has shown above that was my main gripe with it.

Whether you agree with shanklys judgements or not,he has a good point of comparing IQ difference with performance hit. Comparing performance hit between two different graphical features is pointless. Comparing the performance hit between having the feature on or off with the image quality shows you what you are trading performance for. Obviously IQ cant be compared quantitatively and it really doesn't need to be since beauty is in the eye and all that.

No am not just you twisting it that way. Did I not just say in OP PhysX effect are also worth it? even if Batman smoke it over done abit.

Yeah that is a glitch that does happen but I would still use it over being switch off. It does make the game more enjoyable. Am sure if you look enhough in batman PhysX effect can also sometimes go pear shaped. Does the smoke always work correctly?

I have always been a big proponent of TressFX and think it is great. I am also a big proponent of GameWorks and all the subtleties it brings from smoke to HBAO+

Genuinely I want to see these techs pushed and don't take this the wrong way anyone please but if you don't have a machine capable of running things from TressFX to PhysX, deal with it! I want both Nvidia and AMD viaing for my money by putting more attention to detail.

If you look on the NVIDIA site, they actually have started doing tweak guides for a lot of games that do exactly this - have each setting low/med/high to show the impact As Well as having pics showing Low/Med/High so you can see the IQ change as well

And that is great and all I do agree more effect is always better for the gamer. My problem like I keep trying to point out is when effects are used and hurt performance but also add very little. Look at Ultra vs Low on FC4 and FallOut 4 and tell me the truth worth it?
Same with HBAO+ vs HDAO am sure I remember a game using both but I can't remember it.

Someone in the Fallout 4 thread in the PC section said there are certain scenarios where ultra god rays are noticeable, in the woods for example with the light shafts coming through the trees. I think they said they'll upload some comparisons tonight. What is rather daft though is the performance hit still seems to be there when god rays aren't noticeable.

I was disappointed with FC4 and the hair. Game looked great when they patched it up but then I look at Ghosts and the Dog looks awesome. Then you put HBAO+ and less performance hit and does make things look better. Add in some GodRays as seen in B:AK and looking great and then add in the Smoke from the chimney's and really starting to look good.

It all adds up and of course it comes at a performance hit but the beauty is, if you drop to an unplayable level with those effects on, turn them off. They are not hard coded and some AMD can't even run.

TressFX 1.0 is quite heavy on performance and sometimes glitchy but looks amazing and I don't play TR without it. I read somewhere that there is a TressFX 2 or 3 which is being used in the upcoming Dues EX:HR. That will be a good benchmark.
