Gaming 2500k cpu upgrade? 6700k or 5820k

For gaming, there is no point in upgrading from a 2500k in my opinion. Hence, I am still using a 2500k :)

As long as you have a decent CPU, its all about the GPU.

I didn't need to, but did I want to? Hell yea!! In all seriousnes, subjectively speaking there's noticeable stability improvements in gaming scenarios. It's not across the board, but its there. So for 2500k owners there's no necessity to upgrade, but there is an improved experience to be had if your willing to spend. There's also that lovely new platform...

I'm an unapologetic enthusiast too. I love building and configuring a fast new system every too or three years, so I'm happy to spend the money for that alone.

Not true at all. There are many titles where a 2500k will be much, much slower compared to a new i7.

Yea, a lot of modern games do get better performance on an i7. Most of the performance increase would come from the fact you went from an i5 to an i7, not because you went for a newer version of the CPU.

I must say that up until this point I thought the 2500k was still entirely sufficient to drive a high end GPU. It's probably worth bearing in mind though that the results you've posted are for resolutions of 1200p/1080p respectively, and so any differences in performance between the two CPUs will likely be diminished at 1440p. Still, I didn't think that even at 1080p there would be such a performance gap between them.
 
You would be mad to swap an i5-2500K for a skylake, unless you already own a Titan X in Sli.

An overclocked 2500K system is not going to be the bottleneck from a games point of view.

Put the money into a new card instead, you will actually see benefits that way, you won't by going skylake. From a games point of view.

edit: maybe one or two ****tily optimised games like Arma3, but for the rest of mainstream AAA releases - GTA V, Fallout 4, Battlefront, whatever, the CPU will not bottleneck at all.

i7's are really starting to stretch their legs in some games now. I think multi thread/core support in games will only get better over the coming years as well.
 
On a 2500k atm. Can run at 4.9 quite easily but really tempted with x99.

Runs smooth as with 980 ti's in sli as is but the upgrade itch won't go away.

Really need to stay off these forums.
 
went ahead and did it. The board of the 2500k or the PSU was on it's way out, kept doing funky things like multiple attempts to boot and just flashing then powering down.

But anyway:

it was an expensive show but hopefully it's me done for 5 years in the CPU department. The board has a 5 year warranty. I'm going to do a mild OC on the CPU.

i also noticed that even at stock speeds the main MMORPG i play runs much smoother.

What resolution are you playing at OrionTC? And is it your average frame rates during gaming that have improved the most or minimum frame rates?

1080p, 144hz monitor.

The game I play is archeage, its a cryengine game, the FPS is very dependent on where you are, if you're in a crowded area etc, its very different to a single player game.

It's still early days and i need to OC the cpu a bit but I can definitely tell my minimum and average FPS is higher in this game. It would literally grind to a halt on my 2500k, the CPU ultilisation when i selected "multithread rendering" in the options would spike between 80-100% per core.

This 5820k handles it much better.

I guess the problems I had with the 2500k stability could have played into things too making the 5820k look better. My 2500k was many years old and always been overclocked to 4.4ghz.

Nice gear. I've upgraded from a 2700K, although I didn't technically have to. My guess is, any Intel i7 from 2700K and above will do just fine for a few years to come.
 
5820k is good for games (but no better than Skylake) because of its huge cache. I dont expect any game anytime soon to utilise 6 cores fully though. That might be wishful thinking.
 
Does anyone have access to both of these chips? Not one single hardware site has been able to compare these two chips overclocked to their Max in a suite of modern games :(
