Gaming Build £600

Would a PentiumK overclocked possibly give better results than a 2.7ghz i5?

I am still new to this so correct me if I'm wrong, but the pentium K is only DDR3 and from what I have read DDR4 would be more future proof. It would save me having to buy a new cpu and new ram in a years time?

I'm going to hang fire on a monitor for now and make do with what i've got - but if you have a suggested AMD build with a monitor please fire away ;)

Yeah, the PentiumKs are for the 1150 socket type, and you are right, DDR3.

There is an article here: http://www.ukgamingcomputers.co.uk/ on overclocking one to 4.6ghz on a £43 Asus Mobo that OCUK sell.

In terms of upgrading in a year you would consider a 4790K upgrade CPU later. The CPU Stulid suggests is excellent and won't need upgrading for a long time. However the same cannot be said about the 960 graphics card. Horses for courses.

I get you, to be fair I'd rather take the easy route and get the CPU that will last :D

Would an R9 380 graphics card be a better purchase than the 960 if I was to buy a free sync monitor too? And could I do a straight swap between these two gPU's or would I have to change motherboard etc to accommodate the swap?

There is a 3% difference in the default memory speed on the 3 r380s @ £170 from what I can see and a 1% in default GPU speed.
So you would go with the ASUS due to 3 year warranty:

But that £50 saving on the B grade is too much to ignore! :D
You almost never hear of people getting dead on arrival problems with B grades. Just scratches or missing cables (admittedly sometimes missing all of the cables).

Quick - before the 4pm next day delivery cut off! :)

How does this look?

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £606.39
(includes shipping: £12.60)

The board and cpu combination work together .

Go to Asus website, look for that board, look at the cpu support list for it.

As for the R9 380 sort them by price and pick one, either 2GB or 4GB version.

Then check the cards physical length to what the case can accept, you find this info at the manufacturer websites.

Case internals:
Supports graphic card up to 350mm in length with one HDD mounted
Supports graphic card up to 210mm in length with two/three HDD mounted

vs Asus website graphics card dimensions:
10.76 " x 5.74 " x 1.65 " Inch
27.1 x 13.9 x4.2 Centimeter

270 < 350. So looks like it might actually affect multiple magnetic hard drive installs? But good to go with just the one in the above build.

I went for the spec above with the r9 and i5-6500. Will probably go for a free sync monitor when i've got a bit of cash - those g-sync ones were way too pricey.

Thank you stulid and JTrickle for all of your help :D

Do you think I will only be able to fit one of the HDD in my case after installing GPU?

The Asus card listed looks like it will encroach into the bottom 2/3 standard hard drive places (or at least give no room for flat SATA cables etc).

It wont affect the top 3.5 bay for the 1TB drive.

I'm guessing you won't have a major problem positioning the SSD.

If you want to add more 3.5inch drives later, you would possibly have to use a 5.25 bay adaptor at the top of the case. Or get creative with rubber bands and bluetack ;)

Just the 240gb SSD and 1tb HDD

As long as it fits with these then happy days :D

This will be my first build incase you haven't guessed. Sorry for all of the noob questions!

Hi guys

Had a busy night setting my PC up, can't wait to get it going.

I've come across one problem - the fan that I bought does not have a long enough cable to reach the motherboard from the front of the case.

Is there a recommended extension cable I can add onto this or another way of tackling this?

Cheers
