Hi all,

I am new to this forum and also to building a gaming rig - I have played around with computers quite a bit but never built one from scratch!

I was just wondering if any experts/gamers could possibly have a look over the components I have researched and see any glaring errors in compatibility or any recommendations. I have approx £950 to spend and I am pretty much on budget with just a hard drive to buy at a later date as I already have a small one for operating system:

CASE: Antec Three Hundred - £50 (already purchased)

CPU: i7 950 3.06 GHz, 8MB Cache - £227

MOTHERBOARD: ASUS P6X58D-E - Intel X58 - £153

PSU: Corsair HX Series, 620 Watt - £113

MEMORY: Corsair (TR3X6G1600C9) 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz XMS3 - £74

GAPHICS CARD: Sapphire HD5850 1GB Graphics Card - £169

CPU COOLER: Thermaltake Frio CPU Cooler - £41

HD: 80G SATA II Drive (already have)

DVD: Samsung SH-S223C 22X SATA Dual layer DVD Writer DVD±RW Black -£11

Think that is all, any help would be much appreciated.

Oh and I have an anti-static strap and mat to help complete the build without any expensive mistakes.

I know the DVD drive is not great but I figured for £11 it will do until I can get together some more money for blue ray.

Cheers,

awfallen

It is not crap at all. It may be overpriced on that link as you can get the newer HX 650 for £99 with a 7 year warranty. But the HX 620 is still a great PSU.

No.

If he already had it, then keep it, but trying to buy something thats around 3-4 years old, overpriced, beaten by PSU's with higher efficiency/wattage/price/cabling/connectors/atx standards/ environmental directives etc is madness.

If its so good, you buy one!!! while everyone else is enjoying £££ in their pockets for psu's with the same wattage/amp ratings

I already have one. I was just pointing out that it is not a crap PSU as you are trying to make it out to be.

If i was after a new PSU now i would probably go for the HX 650.

So your doing some purchase justification reflex. explains all.

Thanks for the feedback guys and I can only apologise for the amazon links and not overclockers, I shall try and create a basket on here too and compare differences.

As for the PSU, I have decided to take your words of wisdom (I agree with chuggerboom in that the HX620 got a lot of good reviews as this is what I based my decision on) so I have decided to go with his bigger brother for less money! Nice work stulid!

PSU: Corsair CMPSU-650HXUK 650W - £93.82

Just checking, does the CPU cooler look OK? Doe the weight of coolers affect the MB and how can I reduce the effect of this?

The Sandy Bridge CPU series (after googling) still isn't out yet - do we know expected elease dates. Also, would it be worth waiting for? Would it be the ame LG1366 chipset which could b upgraded in a few yars time?

Cheers

Sandybridge release date i believe is the 9th of this month so not long to wait. At least that is the date the OC bundles with sandybridge are coming out :P. As for will it be worth it? Hard to say but there is the chance it may decrease the price of some of the olders CPU's hell for 4 days its worth the wait.

Im in exactly the same boat as you fallen and im waiting untill after its release. Best advice is to keep an eye on other posts in this section with people building their own PC's. Will give you more of an idea for your own when it comes to crunchtime. All the best
