I'm sure there are others out there , that every once and a while play some old retro games either using the original system or some emulator. I was looking through my loft and by accident found my amiga games i was going to sell at a bootfair. The memories came flooding back when i picked up the boxes , orbitus... Lemmings... Kristal... Rampage... Dragons Breath... and more :D . So , as i've done before , i loaded up my winuae loader and started playing , but this time i decided to go further back. Just been playing all my old amstrad games , Dizzy... Dragon's Lair... Gauntlet...

Good times this weekend must've gone through so many different systems of my childhood. It's funny how seeing the front cover of a box brings back memories of the game itself , Forever printed at the back of your mind

Here's a question , if you think of a Retro game from your growing up what's the first game that pops into your head?

I'm only 21 and it's not really retro but the oldest game I can think of playing when I was young was um umm... Descent!

I remember really liking the game, wonder what I'd think of it if I try it again now.

I also had the Amstrad CPC 464 and an Amiga. It's hard to know where to start! On the Amstrad I played Harrier Attack, Roland in the caves, Dragon Ninja (seem to remember that being better than c64 and spectrum). I always remember that sultans maze took 17 minutes to load. Aminal, Vegatable or Mineral:p from Amsoft:D

When I first had the Amiga, the most impressive game was Shadow of the Beast. I used to play Rick Dangerous and too many to mention.

One retro game that really gets me is Turtles the arcade. They had it at the Odeon in summer 1989 and I was blown away by it. When I finally got mame years later (hence the username) it was the first game that I played and first that I finished. It's not even that good a game but it still triggers something from back in 1989 that makes me feel happy:o I was amazed by the different amination when you attacked. It wasn't just a 4 frame sprite anim, it did vary.

lol Roland in the caves , i'm really not sure why but that game always gave me the creeps or made my heart race. Having that damn dragon creature coming to eat you as i hurry to get out the caves for your life!

My early gaming memorys are form the atari 2600, the likes of pitfall, space invaders, pac man. Then came my commador 64 which had some awesome games when they worked. The oens i remeber most was the last ninja , new zeland story, bubble bobble, rainbow island and ghost and ghouls. I remeber most of the games been on tape and i could buy them at my local sweet shop/toy store for about 3-5 pound each there was a big box of them was hit or miss if they worked mind.

Makes me feel old but i am 25, at the time my perants didnt have a lot of money so as other people where in the 8 bit era i was still on the old skool games.

My first memory of gaming.

I am 27 now and remember my Amstrad fondly, my best gaming experience
was on the Amiga with Cannon Fodder. Loved my Amiga...

Anyone else feel modern games have lost all
sense of fun? All it is now is sequels, grinding, leveling or working for unlocks, boringz.

Watching that video of Harrier Attack brings it all back (I mentioned that game a few posts previously) I was only young when I played it, maybe 6 or 7, but there was a level that had me stumped for a while. I usede to always run out of fuel but then I realised that I could land on a boat part way through the level and fuel up. Looks quite basic now.

Ahh now your talking, my gaming history began on one of those old Grandstand (or Fairchild in the US I think) Bat and Ball type things. Speccy 48k was my first proper venture in the gaming world however - my dad bought one home from work in 1982 and I was hooked (fave games were : Manic Miner, Deathchase, Harrier Attack, Wheelie, Ant Attack, Knightlore). I often spent time at friends houses playing the C64, Saboteur and Spyhunter seemed to be played a lot from what I remember.

After that came the Amiga of course, which I had a long running love affair with - too many good games on that to mention really but a few from memory that stand out : Eye of the Beholder, Wings, It Came From The Desert, Lotus Esprit, Monkey Island 1&2, James Pond, Zool etc etc.

These days, I have some hardware up in the loft still but mainly run emulators on my pc. I built a mini arcade machine for Mame stuff a couple of years ago. Again too many to mention but a few firm faves for me : Vigilante, Kung-Fu Master, Double Dragon, Stun Runner, Rolling Thunder, The Simpsons, Turtles, Killer Instinct, Space Harrier, Outrun, Special Investigation, Chase HQ, Star Wars.

right, that's it. I'm going to play (and maybe finish) Robocop the arcade version. I always remember that the Amiga verison had the cheat (or 'poke' as they were called back then) of pressing SPACE to pause and then 'best kept secret'

I'm a few minutes in. That's just reminded me of a retro game quirk. The 3-way gun:o:o:o

Probably Roland in Time, although I didn't actually like the game much.

My preferred Amstrad games were Cybernoid, Football Manager 2, Operation Thunderbolt, Target Renegade, Barbarian, IK+....

that game was the bomb

Finished it! I feel life finishing Final Fight now but I dont think that's as short as Robocop.

mame - what emulators do you run for all the classics, I assume you do with a name like mame... doh I guess I just answered my question lol.

Mame for arcade. Fusion for Megadrive, Znes for snes. I keep meaning to setup an Amiga emulator.

Winuae For Amiga & Winuae Loader for Amiga Hard drive games
CCS64 for commodore 64
Dosbox for DOS

Some more :)

I sold my Amiga months back at a bootsale for £40... regret it now :) Had an original boxed copy of Zool too.

Anyway, I spent my childhood playing this on my dads PC;

edit

Epic.
