Gaming has lost its spark for me

tbh this aint a new thing, the rehash of games with improved graphics has been happening for years. For me the best time was around the late 90s early 2000. We had hl, the rise of cs, inventive new games like home world, black n white (ok had its problems but it was still great), total war. Plus loads of others that I cant remember. Since then theres been very little in terms of new ideas. For example I love RTS but the fact is they have changed v little since C&C and Im just bored so I aint touched any of the new ones. I suppose there has been the odd gem now and then, morrowind (which is just a copy of older elder scroll games), nexus, portal and wow (not my cup of tea but its certainly made its mark on gaming).

I think online games are a little different however as they are v dependant on the team/comunity you are playing in, rather than the quality of te game its self. Before this point is made about "PC gaming being dead" consoles (with the exception of the wii) are terribly repeative and 99% of games appear to complete trash. I suppose they can get away with it to some degree tho as they are selling to a new generation of games. As appose to a lot of PC games that have seen the ideas over and over.

As said above it really comes down to story for me now.

Well I personally think that GFX's these days are good enough, I am much more in to how the whole game runs & feels & plays.
Because BF2 has been out for such a long time now people play it well, You won't last long on BF2 if you wander about on your own or go rushing in alone.
With the squad system you instantly jump in with a gang of guys & go hunting together. Everybody goes capping these days as well which leads to a moving battle you have to fight to keep up with.
Maybe more luck than judgement but BF2 just breeds players that want to play in a Squad on a Winning team. This makes for real community gaming where people quickly try to identify with there playing partners. Before the first round has ended you already know a few guys on your team & know which way the battle will go as far as which squads on your team are working towards there targets.
The game is Awesome, What more can I say.

Agree with Malc30,

BF2 was the last pro game on the pc that really had good MP with decent skill.
Cod4 was a spamfest and even though UT3 is good, no one is playing it at all.

I hope we haven't already gone past the pinnacle of gaming.

Well i just installed Bf2 and played it for bout 20-30 mins...

Woah this is fun! haha.

I managed to get more kills than deaths which was nice. I had a shot in a chopper... flew about for about 20 seconds then lost control and crashed. was good fun :D

Can someone tell me a nice server to play on.

I cant believe ive had it in a box in the spare room for a few months and never turned it on:)

Infantry only city maps are the best mate. I can't remember any specific servers though

sid

Ok mate ill look into that.

Think ill treat myself to a big greasy kebab and have a BF2 night tonight lol

Recruited to BF2

It is best to find an empty server & praccy with the Choppers & the jets, They are quite critical in a battle so people rightly get a little chuffed off if somebody is wasting your Only chopper ;) Half hour of fun on an empty server & then get stuck in mate & then you can ignore the L33t:rolleyes: moaners.
Infantry only is where to get your shooting skills as on vehicle maps it is more a whole army game where as IO is more Squad & individual warfare.
There really is so much variation on BF2 I just couldn't write about it all in one post/thread.
Ranking up is also a nice single player accomplishment system built in to your online play

For gods sake, now I have to go and play a butt load of BF2. I can't hear about it and not want to play it :D

Well can you tell me the ip of the server you join mate and ill come along. Or maybe a couple of you guys could come to a quiet server with me and laugh at my pilot skills

I've played for a while but I'm a bit of a nub as to which servers are decent, I'll let you/Malc decide :p

I barely know how to navigate menus let alone find a suitable server :D

i might go get a bite to eat first then maybe we could organise a bit of a session?

Anyone free at 6.30pm... could be fun watching me get nailed

My head memory suxs so I'll have to write down the servers that show up when I log in later then post them back here.
I am not stuck on any server though & never have been, All I do is refresh my list & then go on the Lowest ping 64 man server that has a space, Use your filters to get rid of empty ones & Passworded ones etc to make your list more readable.
Spend some time on an empty server though & have some fun in the air as it's a bit frustrating waiting for a jet on a busy server only to get wasted in a second by an experienced pilot.
One way to introduce yourself to Proper BF2 play is to join an Infantry only 64 man server & go Medic. Drop plenty of packs to keep yourself alive whilst you get used to firing the weapon accuretly & pick up points by healing & reviving others. The trick is to drop 4 packs in a line then as you shoot & get wounded just move over the dropped pack to restore health, rince & repeat till he is dead then re lay packs & revive any dead.
Best of all though in the early days just have fun & try to ignore any war talk as it does get a bit heated.
Lastly, Do Your job ;)

if got cod 4 come try our zombie dog server for a laugh im in kinda same position and it is always a laugh.loads on now 30 odd people and easy to play.

ip is 77.74.194.130:28936

I had the same feeling about PC gaming but then just realised that I simply got bored of FPSs that all seem the same. I started playing more sims and racing games now and I got my spark back. Don't get me wrong I still play more arcade type of games and I enjoy them a lot. I think it's just the fact that I play them less that makes them more enjoyable.

It's my League racing night in the Caterhams on RFactor so if I am on it won't be till late, maybe after ten time. I've always found the best time to play BF2 is between 10pm & 2pm ;)

Well im up for a blast if anyone is interested. Been having great fun on it tonight

Are there any games that can ever feel fresh anymore?. I want to get back into something and game a bit in my spare hours. But there doesnt seem to be anything right now.

Maybe ive grown out of it :(

I think the issue many people seem to have with pc gaming is that at one stage or other, they got hooked on at least one multiplayer title, whether that be a FPS, MMORPG or whatever. They were borderline addicted to the game and used to play it regularly for years to a competitive level.

Then for whatever reason they stopped playing. This leaves something of a void and hence the 'loss of spark' or freshness. Other games feel a bit bland because you aren't so in tune with the gameplay mechanics of your beloved Quake/CS/WoW/whatever.

I guess the question is whether you are the type of person who is happy just playing through games without getting "The Feeling"(TM) - you know, the feeling you get when you've just won a big clan match, nailed that boss in an RPG or whatever. The feeling you get when you get home from school/uni/work and sit down at your PC, still salivating at the prospect of loading up your game of choice for the 723rd day in a row.

I actually game 'differently' to how I used to. From around 1999-2006, hardcore Quakeworld dominated my gaming and while around 4.5 years ago I started to play more singleplayer again, it still played second fiddle to multiplayer QW. For the last 2 years however I've kinda knocked that on the head, still playing a little every now and then but checking my demo directory I haven't played an official match since May 2006.

This doesn't mean that gaming has lost it's spark for me though. It's not quite so all-encompassing, I mean it doesn't dominate my life the way it used to (getting a poor degree classification, playing for the UK, travelling to an overseas LAN etc). But I still really enjoy gaming and in fact have taken the opportunity to play quite a few of those games from 2000-2003 that I missed out on at the time due to QW.
