Gaming keyboard decline: A pessimist's view

Plain and straight forward mechanical keyboard is all you ever need.

Preferred switches, backlighting and media keys = perfection.

I bought the Corsair K70 keyboard from the MM a few months ago and I think it is a great keyboard. It is very nice to type on and play on and suits me down to a tee :) I think it is classed as a "gaming" keyboard but I don't since it only has the normal keyboard keys plus a few buttons for media control and that's it. No macro keys or anything else and I couldn't be happier with it :)

Stoner81.

I used the cheap CM storm m&k that's like £30 and it's so much better than my brothers razor keyboard. And I don't care, once you get used to something it tends to feel okay, I've got on with these really well.

Totally agree with the OP

long rant

Which one would you recommend then? I hear the new Ducky's are not all that. Problem with LEDs, and I do need good backlighting. Filco? DAS? Cherry?

It's the plague of our time. Everything is considered disposable nowadays, and made cheap. It's not like nobody knows how to make stronk peripherals, and that they would be particularly expensive.

My old Dell 2407WFP monitor feels a lot stronger that my latest fancy 144hz BenQ. The stand alone is probably heavier than the BenQ.

Cherry seem to take things seriously though. The keys feel like they are the least likely to bail out on my keyboard, and they are the mechanical, most stressed part of the whole assembly.

Agree that they're dumb and pointless for the price they ask. My cheap Logitech does exactly the same thing. I've had some fancy keyboard and mice but always come back to a cheap Logitech combo set and it lasts me years.

Why do you need backlighting on a keyboard for gaming ? Surely you are looking at the screen and not your hands ? Its a gimmick imo.

I own two mech boards, a Gigabyte Osmium and a Das 3. Both solid and I would be happy to recommend either - although the Das seems to have better stock levels.

I've gotten too used to the gaming area layout on my Merc Stealth as well. It will be hard to go back to a regular shaped keyboard when this dies. It's a pity SteelSeries bought out Ideazon to be honest - they haven't used the designs at all.

Just give me a plain black 104-key cherry MX blue mechanical keyboard with no backlight and no other stupid gimmicks (I'm looking at you useless media keys) and I'm happy. Anything else is rubbish.

I have a Steel Series 6Gv2 that I picked up in a sale a while back and I love it. Super simple design and layout. It feels bomb proof and features Cherry Black switches.

Best keyboard I've owned!

looking for suggestions
currently using a ducky mini which is fine but 1 of my games rly needs F keys too so im looking for a 10 keyless
i was thinking of getting a cmstorm to use for it but they look kind of heavy?
i know thats a weird requirement but im always moving my keyboard bcos where i game

anyway im just looking for a lightweight 10keyless that doesnt suck :) ideas?

im in the market for a new gaming keyboard and mouse but as you say a standard keyboard and mouse has the same layout so don't see the point in paying big money for a 'fancy' one that just lights up lol.

I've had multiple "Gaming keyboards":
Logitech, MadCatz, Razer.

And I totally disagree on the RBG... Sort of...
Sure I don't change it, but I can get a complete colour match across all of my peripherals from different suppliers using RGB ones, where I couldn't without it.

I have a Madcatz MMO 7, a Razer Naga Epic Chroma, and a MaxKeyboard (Cherry MX Red).
Its much easier for manufacturers to make an RGB device than market / produce a blue backlit keyboard, a white one, a yellow one...

Of all the "Gaming Keyboards" I've had I don't really use any of them any more, other than the orbweaver.
The Mad Catz Strike 7 sits lonely on my desk (still plugged in tho), the Logitech G15 sits idle on top of a cupboard and the Razer keyboard was sold via auction.

Why?
Because I don't want 2 keyboards and all of the gaming keyboards are pretty rubbish for typing, they keys feel much better on my Mech keyboard.
IF the Strike 7 was Mech I'd use that in a heartbeat.

It does not however help the OP that he totally doesn't understand Keyboard technology.
I would NEVER buy a keyboard without at least 10 key rollover, preferably N-Key Rollover, and NEVER EVER EVER without Anti-Ghosting for gaming. Whatever it was.

The problem with N-Key rollover is that USB doesn't support it. You have to use the PS/2 connection instead. Most people seem to misunderstand this and think they they have N-Key rollover even when connected via USB.

My keyboard supports full N-Key rollover (it is a Filco keyboard) but since I don't really need that requirement I use it via USB which doesn't support it. I would need to use the PS/2 connector to get N-Key rollover on this keyboard.

horses for courses i would never buy a merc stealth that hideous abomination with weird rubberised "gaming" buttons on the left.

I've been pretty happy with my ducky i understand concerns about some keybaord designs but much like cars there are plenty of options to suit everybody. Sadly online shopping has it's risks and that I can't help with.

One of the best mechanical keyboards I've used is the steel series g6v2 great value for money nice clear pronounced keys no back lights nice braided cable heavy feel. Shame it was cherry browns but for the money it was a solid keyboard same with the 7G.

Having used some pbt keycaps recently i very much want them though.

I do still have my razer lycosa keyboard it served me well and unlike my ducky will work with every bios so it's handy to keep around even if every letter has faded into a blurry mess.
