The difference between any good mouse and a gaming mouse aint hugh. However I dont see how people can play with a cheap mouse. I agree with the above tho about dpi being a gimmik, I went from a mx510 800 dpi to a G5 (v good btw) 400 - 2000 dpi and I cant use the mouse on anything higher than 1200 dpi.

An ice mat was my best investment tbh.

You turned off the windows "pointer accuracy" thing in the control panel though? A 2000dpi mouse is hard to use with it turned on, but when you switch it off and start playing with your mouse now set up properly it makes a lot of difference, and it IS needed.

I now can't play for **** if the pointer accuracy thing is turned on, its just horrible.

i agree, but is very dependant on the resolution you're playing at. if you're playing Quake3 at 640x480 @200fps, then 400/600 is a good speed, but if you're playing... UT3 at 1600x1200, then 1200DPI helps.

my sweet-spot dpi-wise is about 700-800

Btw since we're on the topic of mice...

The mouse feet (the white things at the bottom) on my Logitech MX510 have worn out. Where can I find a replacement? (for the feet, not the mouse)

Just contact Logitech & they will send you some new ones for nowt :cool:

I'm still using my MX510 which i think is Superb. Cheap mice suck but other than that it's down to personal choice/suitability.

You will find the intellimouse pretty damn popular with quake fans

Seems to come recommened by most I my self use it as well. Nice and light, seems to track well and is comfortable!

I have a 518 and it is an improvement to what I had. For the ability to change the mouse sensitivity on the fly is worth the extra cost alone. For ranged combat I turn the sensitivity to the lowest and the closer they get the higher it goes. I also use all the buttons on the side so I do get the maximum out of my mouse.

I am thinking of getting the revised G5 for the added weight feature, a more flexible cord and improved glide pads as mine are fairly worn. I find that the 518 is too light and there is too much resistance in the cord so the mouse moves around allot for someone who games palm on pad and fingers hovering.

About 8 years ago I was doing allot of 3d work and gaming with a cheapo mouse and awful chair which resulted in some serious RSI. Now I am very careful about posture and which mouse I use and with out a doubt the shape (518, G5) that Logitech have adopted for their mice over the past 6 years is about the most ergonomic. All RSI sufferers should stay well clear of mice that force your fingers to spread out.

It is off, Ive tried a few diffrent ways of setting it up and it simple comes down to the fact that I over shoot with a high dpi.

Any one of those playing at a comfortably low sensitivity. FAR better than a standard mouse.

There are only two ratters that I highly rate. The MS Intelli Explorer 3.0, with the red underside back during 1999 or 2000 and of course the Logitech MX series. I've had the MX500 and currently the 518, and they just can't be beat imo. I avoid their setpoint software though - bloat-tastic :eek:

Thanks to the recommendations here and review sites i have ordered the MX518. Currently use the MX500 at work so i know the shape is comfortable. For gaming coming from £7 Intellimouse and was getting fed up trying to move the x-hair slightly to make long range sniping in BF2 and finding there just wasnt the possiblity of tiny movements, hope this helps!

P.s. does the MX518 have on the fly DPI adjustment like the G5?
