sorry if this is posted in the wrong board (was debating a post in the pc board)

are gaming mice worth it? currently using a bog standard wireless microsoft mouse, can i expect any performance increase in-game with a gaming mouse, and if so which are the best mice on the market atm? also is it worth splashing out on an expensive gaming mouse mat.

thanx,
DM

EDIT: I'm an FPS gamer mainly, CSS BF2 etc.

I went from a 5 year old Dell ball mouse to a Razer Copperhead and it took me a month to get used to the new mouse, at 1600DPI from a ball is a massive difference.

Once you get used to it, it does help, the thing that helps me most with a copperhead is the 1ms response time. Compared with my old mouse it was lightspeed.

It does make a difference and if you can afford it, sure go for it.

my current mouse is an optic 1 so will i see much of an improvement?

is the reason to get 1 an increase in response times then?

You probably wouldn't notice a huge difference between 1600dpi and 2000dpi.

The best thing you can do is to try the mouse out that you are interested in as some people appear to have hands that are unsuitable for certain mice, I know people who won't use Logitech/Microsoft/Razer because they don't like the shape.

Logitech do have some good gaming mice though, I've got a G7 (wireless) which is great but not for everyone. Microsoft Intellimouse V3 (wired) would probably be my other recommendation. :)

would i notice a difference from 400 dpi? just been doing some googling and thats what I have atm.

edit: semi can you recommend any places that stock gaming mouse where I could actually go and get a feel for them, see how they fit my hand etc. I'd probs end up buying my actual from a net store. also your views on gaming mats. worth the money? what alternative surface is a good set up?

400DPI to 1600DPI = Massive difference. I couldn't use my mouse properly for days.

at 1600 DPI to get the mouse from one side of the screen to the other you move it physically about 2cm @ 1280x1024 :)

uh oh.. so I'll basically have to re-learn how to play? is it easier to aim accurately with such small movements then?

It doesn't make much difference, the laser makes it highly acurate with little movements. You get used to it and it makes it so much easier to spin around and blow someones head off :D

Sorry I can't really recommend individual stores as they would count as competitors but if you have any big retail chains near they are likely to have a few on display I'd think to test out then you can see how they are before buying online if you want.

I don't use a gaming mat and I never have so I'm not the best person to advise. The only thing I know to be careful of is that the mat works well with your chosen mouse as some don't work straight off. :)

IF you can afford it, the deathadder is the best gaming mouse atm. I've got a diamondback and copperhead and i've just ordered a deathadder. :)

do u just use your mouise straight on the desk then? atm mine is just on a piece of paper :/

Yep, staight onto the desk and it works fine for me. Some people swear there is a difference when you use a mousemat but I've never thought it worthwhile for me. Apparantly teflon baking trays are quite good though. :)

Depends on what you're using it for tbh.

For proper gaming I don't know of a single person who doesn't use a decent mousemat (as in £15+, good makes)

Also, your desk may have very little friction and be very flat, in which case it may be OK.

Edit: As for mousemat go for:

Icemat - little to no friction (but it's rather small, so high sens. only)

Qpad CT - low friction cloth pad (wears out rather quickly)

Titan DKT Monstermat - perfect for low sense and lasts a while apparently (havn't owned this one yet - mine is arriving today and I'll post back results)

Also, read this, a review on mousemats by a well known gamer (Enemy Territory).

I went from a cheapo scratchy USB mouse with about 400DPI to a shiny logitech Mx518 coupled with a 4S Steel Pad and never looked back. I absolutely loved the pair of them, and after my 518 broke i went and bought a copperhead for me and a G5 for my brother because i was so impressed with the difference.

im personally looking for a gaming mouse but im left handed , would like on the fly sensitivity controls as a primary and weight adjustments and a secondary of what i like to have , it being in red or blue would be a big plus as well , any recommendations ?

Copperhead, best mouse for either handed people. It's totally symmetrical, and the software allows you to change which side the sensitivity buttons are (it has 2 buttons on each side).

If u play to a high standard then a good mouse and mousemat combo is a must. However if you just play wee public games or to a crap standard i wouldn't bother, they just help towards gaining extreme precision. I've had a MS v3 - Steelpad 4S combo for years now, stopped playing pro so got a bigarsed everglide mat, not quite as good but my hand/wrist is less freezing now :)

You know one now :) I have had the same mousematt for 6 years. I love it but it has a hole in it now. Cost about £8 and it has a wrist pad. I take gaming too seriously :p
