Gaming on an i7? you're doing it wrong

i used to have a 3570k @4.2 ghz which would be used up to 100%
on 64 player servers and bttlenecked my gfx card (290x dcuii)
anything i tried didn't fix it, until i sold it and replaced it with a 4790k.:D

AMD cards have a huge cpu overhead, now if it was an nvidia card that quad would do just fine.

Pretty much the same here, sli 670 and a 3570k at 4.5ghz. Very high cpu usage, and gpu usage never above 80%. Stuttered a bit too. Replaced the CPU with a 3770k, which even with a lower clock speed of 4.2ghz ran much smoother with higher gpu use and lower cpu use.

My CPU is also maxed out at 80-100% for bf 4 with a gpu (MSI 290) usage of 90+%, I still get good FPS and most importantly, a buttery smooth experience.

Either AMD's latest drivers or/and the last few BF 4 patches have considerably improved the DX 11 FPS and FL as previously DX 11 was simply awful and unplayable compared to mantle on my pc.

that is true.
maybe it was a problem from the game itself that was fixed with a later patch
and there were many people with the same prob.
@Nexus18 you have a 290. how come you haven't ever faced this:confused:

Hang on, isn't the i7 ahead in all the benchmarks.

Surely that means the i7 is the way to go?

So in actual fact it's more like if you have less money i5 is fine. If you have enough for i7 you will get even better FPS.

Also: Shouldn't this be in the CPU section?

I used mantle :p

Edited my post above:

If it weren't for mantle, I would have uninstalled the game as it was that bad even with everything on low/off.

Personally I keep settings turned down to keep a constant 125FPS for "serious" play though.

AMD's 15.7 drivers are extremely good now, games are a lot smoother in my experience.

OP did not specify between mobile and desktop.

That just proves you didn't read the article linked in the top post.

Processors tested:
AMD Athlon X4 860K - $74.99
AMD FX 8350 - $165.93
AMD FX 9590 (with AIO cooler) - $259.99
Intel Core i3-4130 - $118
Intel Core i5-4440 - $184.29
Intel Core i7-4790K - $338.99

There's nothing wrong with gaming on an i7, it's all about how much dosh you're willing to spend on a CPU. I usually go with budget stuff but I had the money and the 4790k was relatively cheap at the time so i bagged one, be it just for the 4ghz base clocks and HT. There are games where it produces higher and more consistent framerates than an i5 (e.g. Crysis 3) and you never know when HT might come in handy.

Plus, I dabble in music production occasionally and the i7 is definitely faster at rendering and bouncing audio than an i5 would ever be.

I'm doing it wrong? The cool and quiet operation of my PC with consistently high frame rates and smooth gameplay suggest otherwise. Not to mention the extra headroom I have to play with over the next couple of years.

Yeah, Crysis 3 uses 90/95% CPU usage with a 5930k overclocked to 4.65ghz @ 4k.

I don't think I'd have 60fps+ without it, most certainly needed when games use it.

I don't regret having bought an i7 even though im not going for more than one graphics card.. Why? because every now and again there will be that one game that will benefit from 5+ threads. Sure its rare at the moment but i would rather have it covered than having to worry about performance if i get into said game. GTA V has been eating up to 80% of my i7 haswell CPU@4,3ghz at times.. Thats 8 threads almost maxed out.. This was back at release so sure it may have gotten better now with recent patches but still.. it proves my point.
