Gaming P.C full build. Advice needed

I've got the ATX socket plugged in. There is a spot on the PSU that says CPU that I have nothing connected to and I have the cable but don't see where it goes on the mobo

So,

you have the 24pin+4pin ATX plugged in?

you have a single stick of RAM, try all the slots, try the other stick?

you have cleared the CMOS, power OFF at the wall, remove the battery for a minute, put it back in and power ON

Just built it outside of the case. All I had connected was RAM, CPU, ATX 8 pin (4), ATX 24 pin, power, reset and HDD LED connectors from the case and it still wouldn't power up.

Also tried it with no RAM.

To stulids post, +1. My old Celeron 2.3gHz CPU was running very strangely, was turning on sometimes, sometimes would not post. When I took it out the pins were bent and three were stuck in the socket :(
So I would see for bent pins

Will I need more thermal paste to put the cooler back on?

After unplugging and plugging stuff back in I went to switch it on and the fan on the CPU and the PSU spun quickly then it shut off. I then realised I hadn't plugged the ATX 12v (8/4 pin connector back in). Does the fact it will spin when its not plugged in but won't when it is tell you anything?

Yes you will defo need more thermal paste
also the 8pin is for the CPU power????
And the fan will spin, also have you considered the PSU as the fault?
Sorry if you have just wanted to know

Well I've got no thermal paste as this was a stock cooler on a brand new 3570k so guess I'm screwed for testing that until I get some?

It's 8 pins but only 4 go into the motherboard.

The PSU might be the fault for all I know, that's what I'm trying to find out. Seems strange it will spin quickly then go off when the ATX 12 isn't plugged in but won't if it isn't

I think this is worst case scenario
you cant even find out what it is, RAM,, HDD, PSU, CPU, Mobo,
I think it is one of the above, PSU, Mobo, or CPU

None of the pins looks bent. So annoyed right now, first build years ago went perfect and worked straight away.

Just feels like I've wasted over a grand right now.

its not the CPU??? can you test the psu in another system? and RAM.? And also gpu. if all of them work then its the mobo?
cant you RAM them?
one of the ways you learn is by something wrong happening
so dont be sad
same happened with my brothers build

RAM them?

I've tried booting it with just the CPU plugged in and still it gets no power so I guess it's either the PSU or the motherboard.

One thing I did do earlier was put the motherboard in the case before I put the standoffs in like an idiot. But nothing was powered on or plugged into it. Would that case it to break?

RIGHT.

Just plugged the ATX 24 pin and 4 pin connectors in from my 4 years old PSU to the new motherboard with only the CPU in and it stayed on for longer this time. It eventually went off again but I assume that's because it only had a PSU connected? Rather than go off completely it looked like it rebooted (no monitor or anything connected.

Only problem is I'm not sure whether my old PSU has all the same connectors as the new one, that and it's not modular. Guess it's worth trying before I send anything back though.
