Hi Everyone,

I am currently looking for a self build or pre-built system for my 12 year old son for Christmas. It will need to have a monitor, keyboard and mouse.

Budget is between £1500 - £2000 but could consider more if I thought it might be required.

Ideally I would like him to have:
- A single GTX 1070ti graphics card (preferably one that is quieter until over a certain temp like a Super jetstream or MSI).
- 8-16GB DDR4 RAM.
- A QHD monitor.
- Windows 10.
- An SSD for the OS and a 1TB or 2TB Seagte HDD for installing games.
The quieter the better, if possible.
- Possibly to run VR in the future should I buy him a VR kit for his birthday next year.

I was hoping that someone might be able to help with some suggestions please?

Thank you all in advance!

Not too sure about UK prices atm but this is my suggestion:

Ryzen 7 1700
Strix B-350-F
Team Group 3000Mhz or 3200Mhz DDR4
Samsung 850 Evo 250GB
2TB HDD of your choice
EVGA G3 650W
Geforce 1070Ti
Dell S2716DG
Corsair K70
Zowie FK2 (or if the kid has massive hands, FK1)
Case: I never suggest cases as this is what you will look at every day and it's not going in my room so it's not up to me. Just pick a case with good cable management and ventilation.

Optional:
Corsair VOID USB headset
Presonus Eris 4.5 speakers

or if you really want to blow his mind with the audios:
Sennheiser G4ME ONE headset
JBL LSR305 speakers

Or if you want to go insane and blow his mind all the way to the moon with the audios:
Oppo PM-3
Modmic
Schiit Modi/Magni
KEF LS50 wireless
(but these audio products cost much more than the computer and monitor would cost. Still. The sounds...)

Could easily drop £75+ from either build by picking a cheaper mouse, keyboard, motherboard and case.

The Dell monitor is unfortunately out of stock at the moment. There is an AOC equivalent that is very similar (and £10 less) but it is reviewed slightly worse.

The Dell would be my pick for a 1440p gaming monitor. If you wanted an IPS 1440p monitor instead, you'd need to spend ~£150 more.

Alternatively you could save money by going with AMD/FreeSync, as 1440p FreeSync monitors are cheaper than G-Sync.

^^^ both killer suggestions from south , bit you've got to be quick on the trigger before black Friday savings change !

You can also have ocuk build then lists suggested with a service charge on top

having used the Ti, if you know who to overclock or he does, get the 1080, if he doesn't Ti as its locked anyways and you have to manually enter the values, least with 1080 , if your not 100% confident, you can still slide power limit to the max and the card will gain performance, this doesn't work on the 1070 ti

but souths two suggestions are on point, personally would switch to the B350 Gaming 3 @ £87 quid to save a bit of cash - as if you dont order the asus board soon you'll lose the free games, and Giga reps on here to lend support to your son if needs be

Hi everyone, thanks for the replies. I have put a basket togther and wanted to gage thoughts.. I know it's over budget but the good news is that the grandparents are looking to get togther and get the monitor so I don't have to include it.

Is there anything you would change, perhaps something that performs better and is the same price or cheaper?

Mouse, keyboard and case are definitely subjective, but I've put in some well reviewed and discounted parts in. Keyboard is spill-proof as well which is nice to have.

For that budget an 8700k + 1080ti is definitely the better option for gaming. 16GB of fast RAM is also the better option over a slower set of 32GB RAM. 650w is plenty for this setup.
There are better 1080ti models (in terms of noise and thermals) for slightly more money, but Gigabyte offers UK RMA, whereas many others don't.

small form factor with a lot of punch, the i5 has turbo boost upto 4ghz so you dont really need a K version and because of the type i chose, it made way for an AIO watercooler as it doesnt come with a cooler full stop, so good cooling efficiency while being quiet, chose the Jetstream 1070TI you mentioned, selected a top quality power supply with plenty of juice, 240gb low powered ssd, 3tb isnt much more than 2 so made sense with the budget. i dont know if you needed windows, peripherals or a monitor, but included them anyways as its within budget and its a nice monitor to go with the new system. certainly a killer system for the age of your son and a lucky one no matter what.

A 1070ti will struggle at 4k imo

The Guy at OC3D noticed problems with the VRM's on that board.

Any idea what resolution monitor your Sons Grandparents will be buying him ? If it's a 1080p then the GTX 1080 ti specced by me and others is going to be overkill. This gpu is better suited to 1440p/165Hz or 4K.

For 1080p the GTX 1070 or 1070 ti is fine.

Also the i7 8700K is faster for gaming than Ryzen at 1080p or 1440p. At 4K they are pretty evenly matched. You do get more for your money though with Ryzen, and even an R5 1600 would do fine for a gaming pc.
