More modern Gpu, such as ATI 7850+ or wait for new Nvidias and an SSD will improve matters hugely. I run off a simular base system and tbh even at stock the CPU is more than fast enough. :)

That'll do the trick.

SSDs are a no brainer. For the £, they make a massive difference to even a modest PC (ignore the £/Gb argument, that isn't the point of an SSD).

Upgrade the GFX card ? Of course, a 4870 is a tad old now, so moving to even a mid-range card is going to be beneficial.

The PSU/Case and probably CPU are still OK, so no need to spend any more really.
 
if i was you get her

GPU: like 7950 or 570GTX
SDD - M4 128GB
HDD - new 1TB disk because she might want store stuff thats fast. plus 500gb hdd at 4 years old could be getting on the slow

my spec is roughly the same i have i7 940 @ 3.2ghz 12GB 128GB M4 & 570GTX SLI.

at it runs everything fine. so your rest of your system is fine notice my only differences are the m4 & gfx.
 
Here's an idea,

buy a new case only. Stuff all the old stuff in the new case, format hd and reinstall windows. Tell her you upgraded it to some imaginary spec.

See when she gets all excited at her new superfast pc.

spend the money on something for yourself!

lol I like that Idea although see goes on this forum a lot, checks new things out, in fact you could be her testing me:eek:
