Gaming rig?

WOW thank you everyone, no one has ever helped like this (except when on the other thread ATi or Nvidia) so helpful! Just so you guys know, I will probaley game for the next 4.5-6.5 years, then see how its comping then!. I like the comparrison site given by RJC, I have a few questions, the mobo is cheap is it reliable? Is that enough ram?

Mattwat, I like your build, I love the AMD socket, but I still think Intel is the better one (please correct me anyone) I only say they are better because my laptop, desktop and family pc's are all Intel.

I like ATI graphics more I think because they seem more reliable.

Jakesnake, I do indeed like the sound of your build. I just dont know!

Please keep suggest guys!!! Has helped a lot!

Oh look, The good old OCUK i5 and i7 debate again :p
Indeed it is! :) care to join....

Jakesnake, Im going to guess, your using a i7 chip>? and your think I should stick with it as shown in your build idea. Why did you choose the nvidia out of interest? You like the others have interesting views..

The board by MSI is not a bad board, allows you to run SLI & Crossfire @ dual 8x, but does not have usb 3 or 6GB/S sata.

The boards below are dearer. but offer extras of USB 3 ect.

i7 is a good system, but just for gaming I would probably go with the i5, or you could wait for Sandy Bridge next from Intel, there new cpu range, this is due to be launched early new year!

I run the i7 for gaming ect!

RJC, thank your for the links, but If your running i7, would you not recommend it? Because I see your rig, i like it! If you dont mind how much did it cost, just roughly?

I would also like the build to be flexiable, Ie. Easy to do for beginner and easy to update for future!

I upgraded parts over time, the motherboard was £200, the cpu was £230 and the memory was £80. I sold my old system so this helped to fund the upgrade. Also i5 was not out when I upgraded.

Looking at the reviews there is very little between the 2 when gaming, but one thing I like is the x58 motherboards can do dual 16x and run SLI and crossfire (most boards do) when running multiple gpu's, even though the performance is about 2 - 5% ~

With the i5 you can spend the extra on better gpu, alternate get the i7 and always by a 2nd gpu later :D

The choice is down to yourself and and which way you want to spend the cash :D

Pics of my system - ignore the gpu's:

The Graphics card, why is it so much...i cant find it on OC and I cant see what is so special about it!!

If I was to upgrade in the future I would have to buy a new mobo AND cpu?

Thats 2 gpu's, link below:)

I do like your second idea, any possible way to cut down even, £15?? like the moatherboard, whats so special about that? From what I read its a serious overclockers board, I dont know how to overclock so I most likely wont, and for the RAM, what bout this

Not sure if that ram will fit under the cooler due to the larger heatsinks, if you delete the cooler then yes :)

The motherboard apparently uses high spec components, but you can always drop to the board below:

What about this? AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 965 Black Edition
or would you go for the
i5, but which i5? the 650 or 760?

Personally I would probably go with the i5 760, the 650 is dual core with Hyperthreading, were's the 760 is a true quad.

What if I go for,
i5 760 £144.98
Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD4 Intel P55 £149.99
dont know what ram to go for
Will go for the same cpu cooler
I want some kind of ATI card..
Dont know what PSU - probaley the truepower?
What else I need?

Something like this, nice case as well :)

The UD4 is out of stock - but for only £2 more, the UD6 is a much better choice anyway! Both of these are high end P55 mobos supporting x-fire/sli and great for overclocking. Part of the benefit of going for i5 is some cheaper mobos are available - something like the MSI GD65 also supports x-fire/sli for much less and will still overclock fine - just no USB3/SATA3 (although you currently get a free USB3 card thrown in). So that board is worth considering too, or the GD80.

You say you wont overclock - but you're missing a trick if you dont. Current intels are some of the best overclockers ever and you'll get up to a ~50% overclock out of an i5/i7 with a decent air cooler. Keep it stock until you're confident, then read up some guides and overclock. It's really easy and virtually impossible to do any damage, unlike in the old days.

Good luck and enjoy.

the i5 is in its glory days and at its peak. the i7 hasent even broke sweat yet.

You keep saying stuff like this - what on earth does it mean?? CPUs aren't people. All i7s arent currently agreeing to laze about for now and planning to work hard later. We already know how much an i7 can outperform an i5 thanks to its hyperthreading - up to 25% absolute max in optimised encoding apps. That will never change. That's it. Hyperthreading isn't magic. At the end of the day they are both near identical architecture quad core CPUs. i7 has a nifty trick up it's sleeve that you pay a lot for and isn't worth a great deal of performance. The future wont change anything for current tech - it's performance is known - a done deal. You talk like programmers are going to coax double performance out of i7 some time, but this somehow wont work for i5. Not... going... to... happen.

you didnt just compare crossfire 5870s to a single 470 did you??:o

Er yeah - because by going i5 instead of i7 the OP can afford the perfomance of 2x5870. That was the whole point.???

:) :)

Thats a great set up!!! I am ordering it most likely!:) thank you everyone!. Could I change the PSU to the XFX 650W power supply because I see the truepower is £99 usually, and so I will most likely not order this week...what should I do?

If the Antec is still at the current price when your looking to order go with that, if not the XFX if it does come back into stock :)

Just come and ask for a fresh spec when ordering time comes, and the guys will go through each bit again and make maximum abuse of the current special offers :)
