Hi peeps.

I've noticed in some games (mainly Bioshock) I get the occasional stutter which is proving annoying. For example, the game stuttered a moment ago as security bots were after me, and the countdown got stuck then the seconds quickly caught up (60 second secuirty shutdown timer) til the game was running normal again.
Also every now and again, I feel a stutter when walking around and I've noticed when loading, the sound sometimes gets stuck and keeps repeating itself for about 4 seconds, then again the system catches up.

Im getting generally good FPS in the game - between 45-60 @ 1280x1024, and you can see my hardware configuration below. Well above recommended specs.

One thing I dont have though (and maybe this is the problem...) is a sound card? It does say on minumum requirements for the game that one is needed, and a better one is recommended (EAX Advanced). My Motherboard (Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4) has built in 7.1 sound, and I'm using a 2.1 speaker setup.

Is the lack of a soundcard the liekly issue or could it be something else?

Thanks all.

Games such as BF2 stutter and get severe performance decrease when during an airstrike/artillery strike due to the sound and not having an x-fi card, but not sure if just walking around does it on games like bioshock. It would be really annoying I can understand. Part of modern gaming it seems when using high detail *wahhhhh* :(

Ive gone into Audio options, and turned it all off, but not sure if that justs mutes things, maybe the game is still using power to render the sound? Its basically a voulme slider rather than disabling it.
I noticed EAX is set to off anyway since I have no sound card.

Update:

If I run games without Utorrent open in the background it seems better, but still have 2 or 3 stutters here and there and its somewhat annoying. :(

Im just in middle of one now actually lol. Second one in two weeks but then I have been moving a vast amount of data from here to there.
I'll see if it makes any difference, cheers.

I *think* I have this sorted now. Did a defrag and dont run the game with background applications and just played half hour Bioshock with no skips (other than a short one when my game loads, after clicking continue). Still like to have no skipping at all tho.

Does BioShock have in the audio settings a setting where you can adjust the quality of the sound instead of just muting it? try that, may help :)

EDIT: what services do you have running in the background that could be causing this then? If something is hogging your CPU then that would explain a lot!

Right problem still not solved. :(
Just started playing Half Life 2 and when the woman near the start is talking to me, her sentences sometimes get cut off due to the game skipping. And still, when walking around theres some very subtle stuttering.

While playing this I had Utorrent open, MSN messenger, Nod32 (always on) and Riva Tuner (always on). But I'm still getting stutters even without Utorrent or MSN running.

Its driving me mad lol

BTW, not liking the game much anyhoo, everything seems a let down after Bioshock...

Hi yeah Ive run a memtest and resulted in no errors. Ive not noticed any choppiness in cutscenes or video, but theres not many of them compared to gameplay.

Hi guys, still me and still not sorted. :(

I was thinking, is there anyone else here running Vista x64 with an 8800GTS 320? Could there be a driver problem causing the stuttering?
I've exhausted just about every avenue with this problem now and I don't know what else to do.

Edit - support request sent to XFX :(
