Just started playing metro 2033, any way always used a game pad, but after listening to the masses on here, decided to give it a go via keyboard

I just dont find it that fluent!, what I mean by that is, your having to press shift to crouch while pressing w to move forward while trying to keep ya eyes on the screen to see any things to kill

Am I missing something?

Ye You are missing Experience ....
Im playing on keyboard since 15mhz 286sx. Thrust me FPS on pad is **** compared to good keyboard and mouse.
But Pads are good for arcade fighting games and defo better for driving ones.
Try to play Civilisation 5 on pad or SC2...

All depends on your skill gear and games you play.

Why would you not be looking at the screen?

Do you not know where your pinky finger is!

If you have your fingers on WSAD then your pinky is naturally resting on Shift... it's not like you have to look for it :p

As said, you're lacking experience.

Playing FPS games on keyboard+mouse is streets ahead of a gamepad, in fact the accuracy, precision and speed allowed by the mouse makes a gamepad feel last decade and antiquated.

The gamepad was design for arcade, sports and platform titles.

It's like typing on a keyboard for the first time, you're always going to be looking at the keyboard and making mistakes, after a while of use you hardly ever need to look at the keyboard anymore, just feels natural.

The other day I played Skyrim with a pad, I was constantly looking at the pad figuring out where the buttons are, this is just the same thing. M+K is mostly the superior control setup, it just is, with the exception of racers, some arpgs etc.

Reminds me of the time I tried to do it the other way round, using a controller instead of K+M.
30 mins later I span the thing round by the cord and smashed it into the wall in frustration.
Not for me!

I always change the crouch key to C. Annoys me when games default to ctrl/shift for it :(

But then how do you press C whilst also pressing D for strafe right?

WASD, Shift/Ctl and Space all fall naturally under your fingers and thumb, which is why it's the default for most games!

And to the OP - you just need practice, especially if you've always been a console gamer used to using a pad.

Your not missing anything on games like this designed around a 360 gamepad its the best possible controller you have 22 controls all within your fingertips without looking & the game is designed around that control scheme so thats where the QA went on refining those controls not mouse+kb.

On something like Diablo3 or a competitive/RTS FPS mouse+kb all the way but I personally find mouse+kb something from the DOS era in most multiplatform games its the worse control scheme & try gaming on a 40" HTDV without a gamepad ;)

After going back to console for around 10 years it took me a while to get back into m+kb but after a while it was so much more natural for fps games. Controller is terrible compared to it. so slow and clunky really.

I have metro on 360 and pc, it controls much better on pc. obviously much more accurate.
