gamming on wfi

effects you latency much? I have a crappy cable& wirless 54g router and can barely get a signal upstairs. I might have to get new one N-routers ok? I am also thinking about powerline ethernet

Works fine for me, using wireless and friend using wired on the same connection, minimal difference. :)

I guess if you struggle to get a signal you might have problems though :p

My son plays CounterStrike Source over wireless without any problems, thats with another two PC's browsing / streaming music from the NAS :)

pretty dire for me at the minute brothers pc is wired to a netgear 108mbps router which is fine, but im using a netgear wireless usb adapter that disconnects all the time. think its time for a replacement :(

I should add that my PCI wireless card is crap, but the USB one I bought (cost around £60) http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Sate...nksys/Common/VisitorWrapper&lid=3225039789B47

This works from upstairs to downstairs, going in this direction :

|-|-My Room|
|Router|-|

Bad diagram but easy to understand, I am using a standard belkin ADSL router. I may eventually upgrade for more signal strength and faster speeds but not for a while!

Works OK for me once I figured out how to stop Windows polling for wireless hubs (happeed every minute or so causing spikes).

There is a small latency increase of around 1ms but nothing too serious.

I used to get that with the WG111 (forget which version). Replaced with a Belkin F5D7050uk and havent had a problem since. Before you change I have discovered a little something. If you use winxp sp2's wireless util with that adapter either switch back to netgears util or remove the oddity's in the wireless adapter's properties where TCP/IP and all that are, they begin with "a" I think, along the lines of Agia... can't remember exactly. I know these caused similar problems at work, removing them resolved the problem, or using netgear's util with the oddity's left alone... only after I replaced the adapter on my PC... doh!

Hope this helps... let me know...

ive tried running it m8 using the windows xp utility and the netgear client, but the problem persists. the adapter is the netgear wpn111 108 mbps usb, theres a large thread about it on the netgear forums, a lot of people there think it may be a heat related issue and i can confirm that the adapter gets quite hot after a period of a few hours

Absolutely no noticeable difference. Pings are the same, transfer rate the same. I even checked a speed test site and got the same results.

Okay there is one issue which on my 3 wireless PC's prevented speeds above 2.5mb, but it can be fixed with ease.

Go into 'Turn Windows features on or off' and uncheck the following box
Remote Differential Compression

Netgear have great routers / modem routers but their failiure to get their USB / PCI wireless adapters right surprises me. Maybe go with a belkin then if you want to try a different manufacturer. I have had no problem with mine and it has been going for around 9 months now.

Belkin F5D7050UK 54Mbps Wireless USB 2.0 Network Adapter, was considering this one. its certainly a lot cheaper than the netgear which ill be sending back and looking for a refund for, should pay for the new adapter and a few quid left over. thanks for the input and advice bluetech

No problem, glad to be of help. The netgear router you mention, two things. Is it a range max? Do you need the 108 Mbps of bandwidth over the network? If the answer is no to both you are all set to go with the Belkin adapter. If the router is a rangemax, moving to a belkin will mean loosing some of the range, but the range is still good on the rangemax series regardless of your adapter. If you need the 108 speeds you have to have one of the netgear adapters I beleive.

Personally I am using 54Mbps speeds and this is fine for sending the odd music file or picture over the network. Anything bigger (video's etc) I just use a 2.5" USB HDD. This is really where a wired network would step in.
