Gas BBQ's?

Proper BBQ all the way.
We bought a quite expensive one last year and boy was it a good investment.
People go on about mess and hassle with these over gas.

With ours you fill the base of the BBQ (before you begin) with some water.
Now you pot all your charcoal on.
Ours lights by opening a side channel and putting about 4 pieces of newspaper in a fan shape inside which you then set fire to.
Our BBQ has lit first time this way every time.
Do your cooking, add more charcole throughout if your doing a lot or put too little on.
When your all done you remove the grate from the bottom of the BBQ at the top and all the hot embers and charcoal fall into the bottom of the unit where the water is from the beginning.
Later you empty the bottom out and you're ready to start again.

I've been to plenty of "Gas BBQs" in the past - it's all wasp and no BBQ taste.
If you're coooking out doors you gotta have BBQ taste with your wasps.

They taste exactley the same as coal bbq just with less mess and effort, i have been known to barbeque myself a burger for lunch because its so easy!!!

Rubbish.
Do you smoke?
What exactly is "mess and effort" with charcoal?

No it doesn't. Having used both extensively, the food from the gas BBQ might has well have been cooked inside on the cooker. There is no charcoal flavouring as there is no charcoal.

A proper BBQ requires a charcoal fire.

Charcoal is flavourless. People mistakle burnt, for charcoal flavoured. I get just as much smoke and flavour from my gas BBQ as any charcoal BBQ. Pick up a load of BBQ books next time your in a bookstore. They nearly all have sections in the front telling you the exact samething.

As usual people who right books on topics have none of the ocuk knowledge :D

Ramsey also BBQ's on gas and I reckon he knows more about food than anyone on here ;)

I tell you what really irks me. Food that states "Suitable for BBQ" on the packaging, yet upon further reading says "Cook in standard oven first then transfer to BBQ". Just how does one manage to do that when you're out in the middle of the Country miles from your standard oven?

I can't taste the difference, would agree it's probably burnt people taste and it's far easier to burn with charcoal (generally hotter and much harder to control).

Gas uses lava rocks or a metal diffusor - in both cases the idea is to not let the gas flames touch the food (it would burn very quickly) but rather to heat up the rocks / diffusor which in turn cooks the food.

I think diffusor bbq's are cleaner / easier.

I will concede to cook food really well on a flame BBQ does take a good degree of skill.

The trouble for me is I use my BBQ 3 times per week no matter what the weather in the summer and atleast once a week in the winter. Its just not feasible for me to get home from work and get a charcoal BBQ up and running and still spend time on here ;)

Thanks peeps, gas it is i think as there are some cracking deals about at the moment. I knew this would cause a authentic v gas fury but i agree that charcoal is ourderless and so the smokey flavour comes fromt he food itself as it cooks. Can anyone answer my other questions without a bickering fest, namely how long does patio gas last etc :)

I use the 6kilo Propane, I think Patio gas is butane. Buy a gas BBQ that uses propane. Its cheaper to buy anyway than the patio gas stuff. Mine cost me about £15 a bottle and lasts me 6 months. Even though I use it to do all my roast dinners on and just about every meat I cook all year. Propane burns hotter too, so its better for winter cooking.

I dont know your buget but look at outback BBQ's 3 burner minimum.

These are awesome....

I roast my meat and veggies in mine in the winter and have even done xmas day meat on mine to relieve the oven for other stuff :)

Get a real barbecue, regardless of what anyone says it tastes better.
"the flavour is caused by the juices dripping onto the coals"
whatever you say I know what taste better, always has a kind of harsh acidity if you use a gas bbq but not if you use a coal one, kinda smoky flavour.
