Gas Bills

Mines electric but it shouldn't be a lot. My flat rarely drops below 15C when the heatings off and no one is there. It has been down to 12-13C the last few days but warms up to 20 and stays there with about 1 hours heating!

Last months gas bill was £39. :o

Rarely had the heating on. It's not been on for as long as I can remember. :o

Student flat. :(

Ours is on for about 1 hour a day, I just bought thermal body wear, ~£20 is cheaper than raping the gas all winter

Well I just got my bill and Eon now owe me £184.01 :D

Just had my first gas bill from Scottish gas. £65 between 11 Dec 09 and 12th Jan 10. (I moved into the house on the 11th dec)
2 bedroom mid terraced house, gas combi boiler for hot water and central heating.
Rather than have the hall radiator on max, I've turned it down, and turned the bathroom radiator to max which will be handy for drying towels. (apparently you need to have one radiator with thermostatic valve at maximum on a central heating system with thermostatic valves on the radiators?).

No....you MUST have a radiator without a TRV (Thermostatic Radiator Valve) and needs to be fitted with valves that you are unable to turn off without the use of spanner.....this radiator is known as a vent and is very important.
The reason being that if all the TRV's on the radiators are activated and closed the loop is free to vent through the vent radiator, this prevents damage to your boiler and central heating circulation pump and also prevents excess pressure build up in the boiler matrix resulting in a leak or blown boiler.

A TRV turned up to max will still activate and close if the temp gets high enough.

this, normally the vent radiator is the bathroom one

dont forget to check your tarriff, most give you half price after a certain amount of units so over winter its not as bad as you would think :)

Unfortunately I never really paid attention to our heating bills, parents are numptys and have been throwing money away on a stupid airmiles plan with ok normal prices, but no "b" plan prices which are significantly lower and being a family who all use computers a lot, aswell as a fairly poorly insulated house our bills EASILY go into that B plan price range and we could be making a huge saving on a better plan.

Its well worth using some price checkers to compare your annual usage costs on different companies and plans, a simple move to a A/B plan will save us around £400-500 a year, one phone call. N-power have a really good deal for high power users that will save us closer to £900, but those prices will only be valid to March 2011, still plenty and at that point we can move to a similarly decent A/b plan, a new plan they have up, or move somewhere else.

Considering our crap boiler, the N-power £800 back total for getting a new boiler installed + £1k saving on that single plan will basically pay for an entire new A efficiency boiler within a single year, after that we'll be saving a lot each year and have working central heating to boot.

Remember guys and gals, don't let your Thermostatic valves get screwed by leaving them closed all the time, we now have 3 radiators that barely work, and one that simply won't turn on at all because the pins are entirely or almost completely stuck with no amount of oil/tinkering is releasing. The boiler being replaced is perfect really as our system seems to need a flush, which you basically need anyway, and we need new valves on several radiators which again as the system needs emptying when installing a new boiler, its perfect timing.

check out some of the links on moneysaving expert, if you sign up to new plans with a different company through them you can get up to £90 cashback aswell, might be worth it.

Just got ours, July - September was £20 Gas, £105 Electric, however our winter bill October - January is £180 Gas, £210 Electric!

Our first bill was when it was warmer, and 2 people lived in the house, our second when colder and now with 3 people in the house, does this sound right though as it seems like a big jump in costs?

Jcb33.

Interesting. I'm probably going to replace the radiator in the bathroom with a towel rail, so that will be a fine time to remove the TVR from the bathroom radiator. All the radiators in the house have TVRs on them.

First gas bill from 11dec to 11th jan was £65, not too bad considering the weather we had.

Nah, was about £180 in credit with my gas bill at the start of December so ive had the heating on without worry. Just got a new boiler fitted too so hopefully that helps too.

Im managing not to have it on all the time, 20 a fortnight seems to last. Been getting them cold weather payments for last 3-4 weeks of 25 quid which is handy.
