Gas leak

They uncapped it and fitted a new meter at the back of the house, and will move it to the front tomorrow.

I'm nervous now that any evidence will have been lost :/

Don't be - your previous consumption history ( before the leak ) on the old mtr and the consumption on the new mtr should match. Thius would show that the leak was responsible for the spike.

Also yes if transco have replaced the meter nad uncapped the mtr that means the pipework AFTER the mtr ( i.e. what property owner is responsilbe for ) is not faulty.

It may take a few weeks of using gas normally on the new mtr for them to see that the reads are drastically different. They should enter into dialogue with you .

Still ongoing. Npower say they don't know who is responsible for the meter!

They also say northern gas networks were never in touch.

Getting the meter moved for free is bloody good, i wanted to move mine from inside the kitchen to the wall outside - literally the same wall so internal to external, 2 grand it was quoted at :o

Without seeming silly, how on earth could there have been a leak in the meter and you not know about it - either by death, explosion or gas poisoning, even an open widow isnt going to be enough to to not be suffering problems if the meter was leaking in anyway.

Edit.... thinking about it, my gas meter is already outside - it was the electricity meter thats inside!!

By law Npower are responsible for the maintence of the meter even if they don't know who manufactured it.

Are you talking about the leaky one that was removed ? Or the one that's been installed ?

Either way all you need to do is keep consumption records. Take a read every two weeks for about 8 weeks and ask for a record of all reads for as long as you have had account with them. There should be a noticeable spike. Their counter argument will be the weather so it's important that you see the winter for 2011 period

the only caveat here is if your gas is with an independant gas transporter but seeing as you said that transco came to deal with street pipe then it can't be but check with NPower . If your MPRN starts 74 up to 76 I think then it would be another company responsible for the meter as opposed to NPower. Npower will be able to tell you your MPRN and whether it's an IGT. If it is NPower still have to liase with the IGT on your behalf ! Don't let them wriggle out of it and get those reads. Once you have some records keep at them. Do you have a complaint open with them now ?

You can ring norther gas networks ( google a contact number ) and ask them for a record of maintence done in your postcode area. Thye should be able to confirm and send you something.

They actually told me they couldn't raise a complaint until they'd had the report from northern gas networks.

Give them a call
All General Enquiries: 0845 6340508

Gas Emergencies: 0800 111 999

You are their customer they must log a complaint and advise you how their complaints process works. That's OFGEM processes ( I work in the industry ) keep asking for am manager and ask for written records of reads and if possible even the logs on your account from every call you have made ( they must provide under freedom of information - there may be an admin cost here but minimal like a £10er or summat. )

The magic word will be Ombudsman if they are not going to enter into dialouge with you. did you confirm your MPRN ?

So after the bull I got from them last time around I was then told to await the outcome of the investigation and the communications between npower and northern gas networks. The very next thing we get?

A letter from a debt collection agency

I'm ****ing seething

Time to escalate it, to the Ombudsman I think.

If you ignore the debt collection, or try to argue with them, I wouldn't put it past your gas supplier to cut your gas off.

Been there had it done.

Ok. Call NPower and make sure they open a complaint and keep it open until the investigation is concluded. This should include recalling the debt and either you and them comevto an agreement as to your outstanding bill OR you get a deadlock letter from NPower which you bring to Ombo. If it goes to ombo NP will be guaranteed a cost of several hundred pounds regardless of outcome. Whatever ombo decide is binding on the supplier but not on the complainant
