This film was recommended on a recent thread. I thought that i had seen all the great movies but somehow this one slipped the net for me back when it came out in 1997.... I had never heard of it before.

Gattaca is set in the not to distant future in which genetic manipulated people have more advantages than the people who are natural born. Vincent (Ethan Hawke) is one of those natural born humans. He has bad eyesight, heart problems and a life expectancy of about 30 years. He is an "In-Valid" and works as a cleaner in a space center. His dream is to become a crew member on an expedition to space. He is assisted by using the DNA of Jerome (Jude Law) who is genetically superior but crippled from an accident.

Amazing story line but what also made the film was the atmosphere created by the soundtrack and the acting performances, Uma Therman was simply sublime throughout. The film has a very retro feel to it.

Amazed this did not get an acadamy award (though was nominated)

I am definitley looking forward to watching this one again and would recommend it to anybody.

Funnily enough I watched this very recently too. Not for the first time. It's a great film. Uma was great too. Those two were actually married for a few years after this was made.

Ethan Hawke is a great actor and it's a shame he isn't a little bit more mainstream. Before Sunrise is another of his which is fantastic to watch.

I normally love films like this but to be honest I found this one utterly boring.

The story line didn't grip me at all, the acting was flat and toneless and the script was anything but good.

Its not the only film where Jude Law has irritated me either.

I was on the edge of my seat but only because I couldn't wait to get out of the cinema first as soon as it finished.

As long as you enjoyed though fella then that's all that counts but I'll be avoiding it like a dose of the clap.

It was nice to see an SF film that relied on a good idea rather than SFX. It was just a shame that the development of the idea was relatively limited. I did enjoy it, but it's not a great film by any stretch.

I loved this movie, and still consider it greatly under-rated. Good old skool cinema, driven by plot!

The only thing that left me scratching my head was the choice of Uma Thurman, who is one of those women we're supposed to appreciate for her looks, but is in fact not very attractive at all.

One of my favourite films, had it on DVD for years, one of those you watch every year or so to make it fresh and just as brilliant as the first time you saw it. Had my yearly viewing about a month ago, still fantastic.

Very good film and thought provoking with an interesting message. Although at the end I was left wondering about what Jude Law had done - somewhat inconsiderate and difficult to explain I'd imagine.

 She's gorgeous in it. I thought the main reason for her being there though it that she's representative of a perfect women, i.e. tall, thin, model stature, etc.

She was more convincing as a genetically elite designer human than, say, someone like Scarlett Johannson would be and probably isn't supposed to be sexy or demure in the conventional sense.

thanks for your recommendation . i may have missed this film for ever! :)

*** SPOILER ***

He mentioned, when drunk, that he tried to commit suicide by jumping in front of a car. That's how he ended up like that; "I couldn't even get that right". And he was on of the 'valid' population.

Perhaps his efforts to get Ethan up in to space were the only thing keeping him alive. Once he had gone, well, what else was there for him.

She's looks plastic, she's skinny, and she's borderline androgynous. I find it impossible to get excited about a woman with no discernible breasts or other feminine curves.

It makes me wonder if she used to be called "Neville" 10 years earlier...

Agreed, it is massively overrated by a few late comers to it, it is a fine premise, but the film itself is utter drivel and completely dull, the makers thought, "lets give people something to think about", unfortunately what they made people think about is "when is this unutterable pile of crap going to end?"
