Gattaca (1997)

I loved this movie, and still consider it greatly under-rated. Good old skool cinema, driven by plot!

The only thing that left me scratching my head was the choice of Uma Thurman, who is one of those women we're supposed to appreciate for her looks, but is in fact not very attractive at all.

yea i dont see why people find her attractive

I enjoyed it (re-watched it recently), but I definitely wouldn't say that it was one of the best films ever made!. 6.5/10 (imo).

I liked it when it came out and I still like it now. The soundtrack is one of it's highlights, and I really like the minimalist sets - modest yet futuristic, not some overblown fantasy, but something that could be a realistic prediction.

*** SPOILER ***

He mentioned, when drunk, that he tried to commit suicide by jumping in front of a car. That's how he ended up like that; "I couldn't even get that right". And he was on of the 'valid' population.

Perhaps his efforts to get Ethan up in to space were the only thing keeping him alive. Once he had gone, well, what else was there for him.

I think you're right and had come to much the same conclusion but it's still mighty inconsiderate - how is Ethan supposed to explain away that? Although arguably if Ethan does anything out the ordinary and has to explain absolutely anything at all he's in major trouble.

*** SPOILER ***

Vincent is now fully Jerome by this stage, hence the stockpiles of his urine, blood, hair etc. What else is there left for Jerome to do with his life?

The only reason Vincent almost gets caught is due to the murder that takes place. Unless Vincent does something out of the ordinary when he returns he can 'be' Vincent until he dies (not far off according to their predictions remember - he was already '10,000 beats' past what his heart should have lasted). He probably isn't even expecting to make it back to earth; one less reason for Jerome to want to carry on.

Was one of the first dvd's I ever saw when I got it free with my first dvd player along with Bad Boys and Urban Legends haha. Gattaca is a great movie, its got everything, humour, suspence atmosphere and a really good storyline. I watched it again recently when it came back on tv and loved it.

I normally love films like this but to be honest I found this one utterly boring.

The story line didn't grip me at all, the acting was flat and toneless and the script was anything but good.

Its not the only film where Jude Law has irritated me either.

I was on the edge of my seat but only because I couldn't wait to get out of the cinema first as soon as it finished.

As long as you enjoyed though fella then that's all that counts but I'll be avoiding it like a dose of the clap.

And how old were you back in 1997?

This. But also he explained earlier in the movie that if he does come back, it won't matter. He will have already proved himself by then, and also the whole reason for the charade was so he could go up in space. Once that's accomplished, it doesn't matter who he is.

Uma's hottest role was as Poison Ivy, she actually showed some curves there. But I can't get over the "wiggle your big toe" scene from Kill Bill. Ewww big feet!!
