New PSU, or can I use a splitter?

PSU is Corsair CX 430W v2
GC is R9 270X

I'm assuming you have some spare Molex cables? If so most graphics cards will come with a adapter for 2 Molex to 1 six pin

yup, when i got my 7850, i got one of those :), but didnt need as as my psu has a 6 pin :p

If you didnt get one, i would go with the molex to 6 pin adaptor. so your not putting all the strain onto the one 6pin.

You will have to be careful using a splitter on that PSU imo, not sure how it is but that looks like a real budget one, and you don't want to be drawing too much current from whichever 12v rail you choose.

I've seen a lot of people have issues when doing this with mining rigs, having to power another gpu via molex adapers, but they strain the rail too much and have damaged things!

Word of warning that's all, the PSU maybe fine but I don't know about the PSU to judge.

So it should be fine running one of the 6 Pin connectors of the molex? Just got to hope the card comes with an adaptor. The PSU is a single 12v rail design and provides 28A/336W according to the spec.

The annoying thing is this is for my brother and my PSU has 4x6-Pin PCIE connectors.. none of which I'm using. If it doesn't work I could always lend him my PSU until he can afford an upgrade.

Thanks all.

There should be a sticky for this.
Agreed, there are lots of threads out there about this all with conflicting info. A definitive stickey would be a big help.

Haha, no, that's my brother.. didn't know he'd already asked.

I'm confused now, Gregster you say in that thread "You can only draw 6 - 10 watts from a molex". If that's the case why do GC manuf provide molex-pcie adaptors? HDDs can pull more than that during startup aswell.

That psu only has 336w on the 12v rail. As you have a clocked 1100T as well things are going to get uncomfortable for that psu. At the end of the day it's a budget psu with cheap internals.

No the card is for my brother, he has an Athlon II x4 @ 3.5GHz on stock volts. Max total consumption on his system when stress testing is 140W IIRC.

There should be plenty of power and it should be capable of supplying it's rated values (it's not a no name £10 jobby).

In any case it's only a temporary solution, he will buy another PSU asap.
