GD may close for a while

As mentioned before, any changes would have to be on a trial period to have any hope of working, Splitting GD up could work now but it would have to be correctly managed and set up.
Hmmm Think think think

Split it into sub-forums and then assign mods to each one. Easier to manage.
I can just see the sub-forums now:
Relationships
Cooking
Shopping
Willy waving
How do I...?
Look at me

The above sub forums would filter most of the GD tripe.

I'm sorry but the idea of splitting GD is a definate "Been there, done that". It completely failed last time, resulting in just a ridiculous level of moderation to keep things tidy.

People are really exagerating how bad GD is. Compared to 99% of other forums it's a utopian soceity. Sure there are some threads that aren't too interesting but I don't see much bickering at all.

Fully agree with the above.

OK, I'm not a really that much of a poster, but I find browsing over this forum entertaining. I don't understand what is trying to be achieved? What exactly is supposed to be posted in GD? Surely it is for the random, entertaining topics, posting advice, and debating a few light hearted issues. People seem to be wanting something along the lines of this, which is a fine forum... But we already have it.

I think a lot of people enjoy general discussion, myself included. Why close it? I see hardly any swearing. I admit there is the odd pointless thread, but I don't lose any sleep over it. It'll just fall down the page if it's really that pointless.

Surely, the fairer thing to do would be for the people who don't like, not to read it? I mean, closing it has the same effect as just not going near it, for those that really can't stand it. (For whatever reason). As mentioned "mindless" topics or whatever it is that's so hated will spill over into other forums anyway. Of course, I respect Spie's decisions at the end of the day, but I don't see the actual need to close it.

I can see the problem but couldn't OCUK just recruit More Mods?
They could be given a section to Moderate and keep tidy.

Eureka! We can call one 'General Discussion Club', and the other 'General Discussion Zone', that's GOT to work!
It's this kind of sarcasm that bugs me infinately more than any of the spam.
A few members need to lose their attitude. Sadly closing GD for a while isn't going to solve that.

I think part of this is a reaction to the school summer holidays. I don't like generalising but I have found that all kids of school age are illiterate glue-sniffers. Once they go back to school/college there might be less rubbish in the forum.

I haven't got much to add except that I quite enjoy reading the 'spam'. It's a bit of light relief from work. Some of it's useful too - today for lunch I made something which Penski suggested in a 'spammy' thread about food.

Of course Spie/OcUK don't exist to provide me with entertainment/recipe ideas/light relief which is fair enough :).

I must admit I don't see how removing GD will in any way 'improve' the forums, nor will it really save on hosting costs as you're hardly going to downgrade the server... As others have said, the 'spam' will just spill over into other forums.

Disclaimer: I wouldn't be at all surprised if this is a wind up like last time - just so I don't look like a fool when you reveal it :p.

TV is often full of crap, yet it's that small percentage of programmes that make it through that makes it worth having occationally. I shall miss GD, I might go out a bit more, however those few entertaining posts that are often shown with 5 stars have been great. It is a shame to see it go because some people lack some common sense. :(

A break might do us all good :)

Too true :p

hmmm GD may spill out over the other forums

anyway hasnt GD been closed before? and if so, look at it now , it didnt achieve anything as we are back to square one

i dont think this closure will really help, but meh your the boss :p

having a few new GD mods may help, but you may not wish to take on new dons, i understand that

Totally agree.

What you are asking people to do is to apply common sense. Unfortunately this is not a universal constant and as such some have it more than others.

To me there are three types of posts:

Spam plain and simple – this is the real dross of the forums and as such should be deleted straight away. To the dons credit this usually happens.

The Grey Zone – these are posts which are usually done with a humorous intent but not always taken that way. This is often dictated by who started the post. If done by one of the more popular members of the forum it gets lots of post and positive feedback. Other times it gets a huge influx of negative childish responses.

Genuine General Discussion – lots of very insightful and useful posts are contained within GD – just the sheer mass of the other two types dwarf it.

Personally what causes the most problems for me within the GD is unnecessary “civil moderation”. So many members put in comments that are not necessary in the slightest. Often resorting to personal attacks or trying to come across as superior when all they do come across is arrogant and patronising.

As such I think the moderators need to take a far harsher line with this group of civil moderators. If someone posts a negative comment instead of ignoring the thread/post they should be suspended after a warning. To get rid of a post you dislike either ignore it (and it will soon fall off page 1) or RTM it to get a mod to delete/lock as appropriate.

This achieves a number of aims:

Stops the arguing and nasty personal comments.
Denies the spammers the attention and conflict that they cause.
Tidies up GD and keeps the popular/good posts to the top.

Maybe, But I really disagree with your generalisation, I'm waiting on my A-level results and have just come out of college, I am not illiterate or a glue sniffer and I highly doubt any member of this forum is illiterate, since they are typing (generally) coherent posts on a forum.

Actually I have noticed in the last 6 months or so the the "old" members of the forum, who all seem to be good friends in real life (due to meets). Have posted less and less it seems?

Reading back on Spie's OP, I think the issue of trolling and personal attacks is a problem. Perhaps a more enforced 'be nice to each other' needs to be tried. Many conversations change from sensible discussions to personal attacks.
