Thank you for not insulting my intelligence.

I have a cunning eye ;)

I can see a voting system being heavily abused in the way you mentioned..
Spie is going to have to think long and hard on this one, It's not an easy decision to make.
Maybe just give GD a 2 week holiday and see how things go..

It would be a shame to see GD closed or suspeneded I think. I agree entirely some of the posts on eBay/how do you boil an egg/spec me a night out do get tedious and repetative. Its almost as if Google doesnt exist. Maybe the rules of the forum should extend to no relationship/eBay/paypal or spec me a spam thread. I suppose the best forum of moderation is self moderation. If you don't like whats being posted then maybe its best not to contribute to it

However there are a number of people do contribute to the forums exclusively through GD, SC, Sports Arena et al because of the social and community aspect. I wonder if a closure of GD would result in a drop in the contribution to the other technical forums. Moreover would a drop in activity on the forums translate to a small drop in business ?? A few people have mentioned that they shop because of the community at OcUK.

/devils advocate

Ultimately it's Spie's decision and he will do as he sees appropriate for the long term good of OcUK

My 2p For what its worth

Fair enough. I've felt that it has gone downhill since a certain few members have been suspended.

How about we...bear with me, this is a bit out of the blue...Actually use the Report To Moderator function as it should be and report posts/threads which you feel are spam or inappropriate?

It may just work... ;)

I feel like a 'grass' when I do this. It makes me feel dirty :(

RTM'd

I only post in GD, I dont know about computers or sport or technical stuff and GD is light hearted fun, It cant be that bad if you consider how many join the forums and introduce themselves in GD and say that they used to just watch the forum but decided it was about time to join in.

I say keep GD, it is just for fun after all, it puts a smile on my face anyway!!

Split it into sub-forums and then assign mods to each one. Easier to manage.

Eureka! We can call one 'General Discussion Club', and the other 'General Discussion Zone', that's GOT to work!

Not read most of the thread - it's grown to 5 pages when I came to check it!

But GD used to be a great place to come as an alternative, there was always a fair few good threads I enjoyed reading.

It does seem to have gone downhill over the past number of months. I guess with the rise of popularity your always going to attract a 'minority' that spoil it.

So somebody begins a thread on a matter that you think is spam/pointless, well just ignore it and let it filter off onto page 2. Those who rant the most about these types of threads are often the ones submitting replies such as SPAM in 72pt font size.

GD is exactly that general discussion, by its name it should have a broad remit. There will be posts you like, and some that you dont. Maybe less whinging is the answer and let the unpopular threads die a quick death.

And we can make one sub-forum for more "mature" adults aged 21+ and post naughty stuff. ;)

Seriously though General Discussion just seems to be a victim of its own success. Hopefully a move towards a more technical forum will also improve GD.

Attention seeking in my opinion.

Have a search for general discussion on Google and have a look at the standard on other forums. Overclockers is no worse!!

What do people actually expect to find in this forum? If it is a serious discussion it will be in Speakers Corner or one of the other specific forums. You can't expect everything to be funny all of the time. I have scanned the front page and can't see a lower quality standard or any total spam threads.

Does GD make up such a part of people's lives that we need the standard to increase? You need to get a life if you actually worry about it.

Moderators do a fine job and i think we should all forget about this.
