GD may close for a while

Perhaps some (myself included) could do with lessons on how to post properly.

ie. at least make a token effort to look on google before posting here with a question. So many times here it doesn't happen.

For clearing, what can we do but to tell the to visit University websites/forums and ring up clearing lines?

.
my post was requesting a thread on A level results, all clearing questions could be done there, i dont see the harm in one thread where members help each other out, and find out each others results

i hardly ever start a thread in GD, so i dont think im that guilty of spammy posts, and i dont feel the need to post in a thread, for the hell of it

Guess some threads which I have started, started out good. And then someone else makes a personal remark about someone else's post in the thread, then you get a few hundred posts of personal attacks. It has put me off even answering back in my own thread.

Topics such as: "I have a problem with my girlfriend" etc, are okay. It's when people say post piccies or make sillier-than-normal jokes (when the original poster said not to), is when it gets annoying.

Girls that have looked at you. What you need to do next
LOL :D

I think its a shame if it is closed because its unfair to those that arn't spammy and enjoy GD. You have to sort the chaff from the wheat on most forums, if you don't like it then surely just don't enter the threads that look 'mind numbing'.

Just like at a party you wouldn't go and talk to the fat girls would you? Exactly.

Don't take away GD, I'll have nowhere to spam :(

I can't imagine the rest of the forum being anywhere near as good without GD. It's not like you're FORCED to read it either. If people don't like it, they can do a Feek and decide to stop reading it.

I agree, But I can imagine how it would be a nightmare to moderate

Absolutely, it would make such a difference. There seems to be a dependence on GD for everything, cooking recipies, relationship help and so on. Also getting people to use the search tool of the forums would be nice, there is a common theme for all those relationship threads.

Having said that, we have been here before and we will probably be here again towards the end of next year's school holidays. Perhaps GD should take a summer vacation too.

I must say I don't believe you to be a spammer in anyway and that you are genuinely interested in those taking A-levels, I respect that and apologise if you were offended by my post.

However, I still believe that the best support for clearing will be provided elsewhere. The feedback and experiences of others maybe of use, but posts asking people telephone numbers, urls of universities, well these should be deleted immediately.

GD != Wikipedia != Google.

i completly agree with you mate, a quick google could sort out a lot of GD, when i said clearing i meant it as an afterthought, tacked on to the actual results thread

anyhoo il stop going off topic, cheers for being friendly about it :)

I don't think a large migration will happen, I'd say the majority of users post in Other parts of the forum so there won't be a huge change

You know what, I flippin love you all and I've visited nigh on daily since 2000. The squabbles rise to a bit of a head every 4-6 months and then die out again as people leave and new ones arrive.

Sad people like me tend to just loiter and enjoy it all.

I think we once had about a month of good interesting posts and not a lot of spam. It was boring. Bring on the melodrama I say.

Am i the only one who thinks this is what GD is about? This is supposed to be a place where you can come and ask anything with your friends.

I thought this is what Forums are about? meet new people and talk to them as friends. If you want to ask what watch to buy or a idea for a gift then you ask a friend. Heck with friends you even act silly and argue

This is not a Eutopia where everybody suddenly becomes perfect and posts the threads that Every single person likes. People treat this as they would if they was with a group of friends. If you want More mature and real discussion get your self over to the speakers corner. No one is forcing you to read these forums.

Also if the majority of the threads are "spam" with what some people see as "stupid" then deal with it .. The Majority of the people obviously want these type of threads or there would be a stop to it by its self. As people would stop replying to the threads.

My Advice was stop trying to Control Everything .. let general stay General .. yes moderate it but dont dictate it .

Cant say I'm surprised.

What I (and I'm sure others) dont understand is why so many Dons have been taken off of GD. If the intention was always to shut it down, fine. But if not it just doesnt make any sense and surely goes a long way to explaining the decline. There used to be a core group of very dedicated mods for GD, with a very few exceptions they are all gone. They arent paid are they? Why not have just added some more technical people to the existing, effective team?

Like it or not, a significant part of the glue that held this place together is gone. For self moderation to work, people have to give a damn, and I think the majority here dont now. It's a real pity, I've made some fantastic friends thanks to GD, its a mystery why people getting along and being friends can be perceived as anything other than a good thing.
