GD may close for a while

Keep it calm please guys. :)

I do not want GD gone, just sorted out. You may not like me but some of the comments (removed) from my welcome thread are just not on, and its right through GD at the moment.

Think this thread is meant to be a wakeup call.

lol, lots of people that I've never heard of/seen before dropping in to give their opinion...funny how you can have an opinion on somewhere you spend absolutely no time at all really isn't it?

Thinking about it, it's almost as if they've been tipped off!! or maybe, just maybe, they're sneaking in to cause some trouble and tip the scales in the direction they want them to go in.

As brilliant as google is, it doesn't have the precise answer to every question. It also can't offer advice based on personal experience, like a number of members here would be able to.

Whilst I agree that there is sometimes a lot of rubbish in GD, I would be sad to see it go. As already stated it can be good, light entertainment and reading when you don't want anything too serious or heavy going.

Given that you obviously have a rather large dislike for GD and clearly don't want it to be a part of the OcUK forums, I don't see why you just don't read it? You can stay in the hardware section and it never need bother you.

There are a number of other sections which aren't hardware based, but are equally invaluable (Motors etc.) and personally I think it's great that one forum with such a large userbase can cater for a wide range of interests.

How about limiting the number of posts/threads people can make in GD? If someone hits their limit regularly it might make them think twice about the rubbish they come out with.
High content doesn't equal spam.

Is that possible?
Very. It was a lot more tightly moderated a year ago.

In all honesty I just don't think the current moderating staff are up to it. There's too much work, too much apathy and too many of the mods simply don't like GD and don't want to wade through the crap and sort it out.

Thats how it seems to me having seen both sides of the fence.

Anybody on the moderating team reads GD regularly, I know that.

Minstadave sees the dregs that this seciton produces, so if your saying his opinion is not valid then your missing out.

Everyone's opinion should be registered, this is not a democracy anyway. If GD is to go, its gone. End of.

Some people have both read to much and to little into this.

Hmmmmm.*ponders*

Why shouldn't they give their opinion on a sub-forum that they don't post in regularly? Maybe they should be the ones that are asked how they would improve GD since the regulars don't seem to be providing many ideas?

I dont get what all this is about. Mainly because i couldnt be bothered reading all 9 pages. :p

Originally Spie was talking about rule breaking and what not in his OP and then everything went screwy after that.

Rule breaking happens everywhere in the forum, it just seems more common here because GD is probably the most popular section, which is a good reason on its own for it not to be closed. Then there's the other part of the arguement... "Nobody cares about your life here, so you dont need to start threads about it". Well, the popularity of GD shoots that down in flames. For the handful of people that hate GD, there's gonna be twice as many that like it.

Put simply, if you dont like GD, dont read or post anything here... it's a very easy concept. There's plenty of other sections for you to post in. GD for me stops the forum from being just like every other forum on the internet. I can come here and get my hardware fix and have a laugh at the same time, and so can everybody else.

As for the rule breaking thing, well, thats the mods job, dont punish us all because of a few rule breakers. Personally, the mods have ALWAYS fixed broken rules before i even get a chance to see em. Which bugs me sometimes, cause i wanna know what i missed. :D

The drama in GD is pretty much non-existant, well as far as i can see anyway.

/babble over

EDIT: And dont forget, GD is probably the only place that chicks post in, if GD goes, so do they.... and that means we all miss out.

DONT DENY ME THE HOT TECH CHICKS!

mightynimrod doesn't want to improve GD, he just wants it gone altogether... even though he never visits here so what difference it makes to him eludes me :)

If you're referring to me, then you're right you probably have never seen me around, because I rarely post in GD, mostly because nothing in it interests me.

I do however have a vested interest in the rest of the forum being kept to a high standard, as I'm always in the hardware sections helping out, and with the amount of mod time GD sucks in this becomes hard. I also spend a lot of time trawling GD weeding out the rubbish that crops up as part of my job as an UB, so I'm not completely ignorant with regards to GD.

Thats changed a lot since I was there then.

In fact, I can't believe it has changed so dramatically when GD has only got worse since.

Well he was consulted and hopefully his idea dismissed. Might not make a difference to him but it might affect those that like the forum. :)

In general though they could be asked for ideas on improving GD from an "outsiders" point of view as they're not regular contributers to the forum.

If thats they case why dont we just let GD go on its own with out Mods and UBs.
Let it run wild and let it run its coarse. That way we wont be taking any Dons or Ubs away from he section they have been given to. We will just get the ones that like to visit

You arent a name that jumps out at me here, so I guess you are one of those that sits in hardware all the time
and has never taken advantage of the fantastic community that used to be here and that was rarely felt in the hardware section.

Really, with over 3k post count and the best trust rating on the forum i would've thought i would - still it's not something i live for.

Life always had a far far superior feel to it (over every other forum on the web that I have come across) because of the community here. Hardware had (back in the day) a handful of exceptionally dedicated members (Tupac springs to mind) HAHA Tupac was an intel fanboy who specced up p.c's - good bloke though but that was about it really. GD, GDC/GDZ etc always had a better vibe to it. Now, there are a LOT of idiots everywhere and hardly any good discussion.

Damn right there's a lot of idiots here - hence the reason for the temp closure of the GD section.

Look at the more specialised Life forums - the Hifi forum used to be about hifi, now its "spec me a tele" and "what POS all-in-one system can I get for 50p". Photography used to be filled with quality posts about the subject and it just isnt any more. All of the good people have mostly gone. Motors is well on its way to terminal decline. GD went to the dogs months ago and never managed to recover and so is looking like it has to be dropped.

Do you not think the forums need a shake up then by your own admission that it's in decline.

Why? In my opinion, it started with Feek and Lopez going as admins. Then with the long list of "retirements", firing of dons and UBs, banning/suspension of longstanding contributers and various other decisions of the new upper-echelons.

I don't think that had anything to do with it, i DO however think that the influx of members that posted utter snot has mainly contributed.

That and an influx of people like those on my rapidly expanding ignore list...

Well, i hope i'm not one of those :)

In my month as UB I noticed edits from everyone bar Gibbo and Fatboy in GD.

From that I think it means everyone reads it or is active in some way.
