GD may close for a while

There is more trolling (and personal attacks) in there than in any other forum of late. Its starting to slip, if its not nipped in the bud its going to get a LOT worse.

Some of it does get pretty annoying, but it's certainly a lot more pleasant there than on some other Motors-related forums I visit.

I have very mixed feelings about GD. Without a doubt half the posts* in here don't contribute anything and wouldn't be missed. Indeed, a lot of threads as a whole are really rather pointless.

On the other hand you have people asking for advice and getting genuinely helpful comments from people with expertise in the subject matter. A couple of examples being Sequoia and his impartial views on legal matters concerning tenancy agreements, and AJUK's recent posts in one of my threads which were appreciated by both myself and my parents. There are many more examples I could cite from other members.

This kind of quick, easy access to advice is priceless and although no substitute for paid for advice from a solicitor, is a good starting point to get a feel for many problems.

........

A very good summary I think, GD can be very useful if you need an expert opinion, and I do think the GD community needs to take a more active roll in keeping GD useful.

I'm beginning to understand how much GD means to its regulars, and I'm sure a lot of them will agree that spam in GD is becoming a real problem, the "punch it in the ovaries" and the like don't really help GDs cause.

I provided plenty thank you although very few members seem to have taken notice. :(

I took notice, if you followed the sticky. :)

If everyone had have listened, then GD would have instantly become good again.

You can moan all you like about the moderation, its the members in the first place that have to cause the trouble. ;)

Good if this planned closure takes place, i think a few people in here need to take a good long hard look at themselves and their behaviour.

Anyways im more or less decreasing the amount of time i spend on here, so in a way its a final goodbye, fed up of all the anti islam feeling this place has and some of the opinions are downright insulting not only to me but also to quite a few muslim members here. Hell i cant even remember the last time i saw the few muslim members post in here.

Anyways back on topic, i think this place needs to be shutdown as a whole for a few days or weeks. Think it would do a world of good and get rid of the numerous morons in here.

Its a punishment.

lol

I think it will all die down come September, but I have noticed a substanial change in GD since I joined. Particularly serious threads get ignored and non serious ones are clocked to choking point with pages.

Says more about peoples inabilities to contribute.

Postcount means nothing if your posts dont get you noticed. You arent someone I have noticed and your trust rating is irrelevant to me as I dont use the MM at all.

Agreed. I have over 9000 posts, all my own, and I'm an UB and yet I doubt most of GD even know me. Why? Well I'm not a GD person.

you did what you could Kell and it was appreciated. It's not your fault if others took no notice, and those who don't come in here by their own admission can't really have an educated opinion on what works and what hasn't.

Agreed. Unfortunately no-one ever reads the stickies, the rules, the thread, etc...

Why dont we not let noobs post in GD until they reach something like 250 posts.
But we can have a General discussion for Noobs Section for people with less the 250 posts. That will keep the Normal GD spam free while the noobs are being trained and getting ready ton be released into the wild that is GD?

What about people like me? Suspensions?

It doesn't, but it's something we can all understand and get a laugh out of, unless it's being used as spam.
GD does need cleaned up, and I think people have got used to the occassional "which sandwich should I have" thread, and decided that it's okay to post one of these threads every once in a while.

It needs something done about it, but imo it shouldn't be removed, and all the regulars will agree.

The threads in GD might not be too educational, but it's entertaining, and everyone knows everyone, all the jokes are known, and it's generally a good laugh, until the spam kicks in.

That and because people don't venture out of GD enough.

We work on training the noobs first :)

Then we work on you.

Possibly blocking spammers out of GD and putting them back into the noob GD for training :)

Is it really new people that are the problem? I don't think I have seen people with a post count of under 10 come out with the ovaries line, SPAM in big bright orange letters or the what should I have for breakfast threads.

it'll reduce resources, 1 - mods have less to do, 2 saves bandwidth = saves money.

What has that got to do with improving GD?

I, for one as a long time forum user will not be happy at all with such a draconian and quite frankly immature response to GD problems.

And really I just cant see this constant 'decline' in GD, its always been the same for me, theres alwayas fluxuations in the standard of GD but never a fluxuation in the number or whiners.;)

depends how seriously you take it TBH, lots of Muslim posters are in here but most of them don't feel the need to fly the flag and complain and insult everytime they see something that disagrees with their religion, either rightly or wrongly

Unfortunately, almost all of the good moderators have gone.
That's simply not true. Yes, moderators come and go, after all the forums have been active for 7 years now and people's lives change. But we have a superb moderating team and some outstanding moderators.

That only displaces the problem though, much like the GDC/GDZ idea that was trialled before. It just means another subforum with with rubbish as opposed to really fixing the problem. There are a lot more well established (post count wise) members posting all of this "kill it with fire/mustard/punches to the ovaries from orbit" crap anyway so it wouldn't solve the problem.
