I just think people Spam because they think it is amusing, and once others join in, it sprials out of control. Silence the hardcore dedicated spammers and followers won't bother.

exactely, i came here with the intention of getting help with my small form factor shuttle build, i only expected to average 10 posts in that 1 thread then id be on my way, but OCUK sucked me in and i post regularily now

since pc gaming is so darn expensive these days, ive bought a xboc 360 and have joined the console lot, and such i hardly post in the hardware forums anymore, you cant expect people to stay interested in PC bits forever, although 90% probably ended up here because we did at 1st

Thats what i mean. One spam or derailment in a thread opens the flood gates and the spam just gets flowing.

Ok I'm handing out free suspensions for all those who are so distraught and need to take some time out to recover - any takers?

You see Dons are nice - they can give them away for free! 0% interest and everything!

Hello, im El.

I see there is a proposal on closing GD for now, well it is your call. Having said that is this actually dealing with the problem or is it just putting it off for a while? Like some have pointed out, closing it will move the problem elsewhere on the forum.

My ideas are as follows:

Name and shame the spammers

Take off their priveledges to post - Perhaps suspend them for a day or two?

Introduce a three strike system.

Increase the amount of post/days needed for newbies to post on the forum.

Screen those who apply for membership on the forum via set of simple common sense question?

Those are what i can think of at the moment. Like i said before, you do what you gotta do.

I'd rather measure how much I've put into something by achievement, how many friends you've made, or something with substance.

Plus it can't really be an accurate measure either, post counts get chopped, inflated for charity, and pre-nuke post counts have been lost anyway.

It is just a number, but its a fairly accurate one (if anything not as high as it should be). Its not the only measure, but it is one.

Yer yer, there is always a catch. Nothing is for free. I bet its 0 % interest for the first few months, then 20% or something after that. Then if its not paid you send the Dons round with baseball bats and beat up the Grandmother.

To those who find the thought of 'life' forums on OcUK so abhorent, why the hell do you come in here then? You HAVE forums dedicated to hardware etcetc where you can talk about all that kind of stuff to your hearts content without ever needing to step foot in GD and the like. It all comes under the same banner, sure, but no one is forcing you to come into these specific forums. How childish 'I dont want it so no one else is allowed it either' :rolleyes:

I doubt it. I have high post counts on other forums I belong to and it's not a measure of who I am or what I post about, or the quality of my posts. Not meaning to offend anyone but high post counts just add up to willy-waving imo.

Doesn't matter how high the count is if everything someone posts is utter drivel.
