Hi,

I'm due to pick up a gearbox just after the weekend from a 205 1.9 GTi.

Would it be possible to swap the 5th gear ratio across to my gearbox on my 1.6? It'd make for much nicer motorway driving, as 70mph at the moment is close to 3800rpm

Thanks :)

My dad's rocking a 1.9 'box and a 1.6 final drive in his 1.6 rally car atm.

Quite a nice combo :)

I thought that only first and second were different between the two anyway?

I'm not sure to be honest, I thought that all the gearing was longer in the 1.9 box.

Any idea what the ratio's are, you could figure it out and see if its worthwhile, after all removing the GB from a FWD car is a PITA.

A quick google pulled up some regs for some 205 race series or other with what appears to be the relevant information:

7.7.1 Gearbox - The gearbox must be a standard Peugeot 205 GTi 1.6 or 1.9 item with standard final drive. No parts can be altered or machined in any way. The gear and final drive ratios detailed below are the only ones permitted No mixing of gear ratios is allowed between Peugeot 205 GTi 1.6 or 1.9 or from any other gear box (such as Diesel, Mi16 etc).

Allowed gear and final drive ratios are :

1.6GTi BE1 - 1st 43/13, 2nd 32/17, 3rd 34/25, 4th 31/29, 5th 32/37, CWP 65/16

1.6GTi BE3 - 1st 39/12, 2nd 37/20, 3rd 34/25, 4th 31/29, 5th 32/37, CWP 65/16

1.6GTi BE3 - 1st 38/13, 2nd 37/20, 3rd 34/25, 4th 31/29, 5th 32/37, CWP 65/16

1.9GTi BE1 - 1st 38/13, 2nd 32/17, 3rd 34/25, 4th 31/29, 5th 32/37, CWP 61/17

1.9GTi BE3 - 1st 38/13, 2nd 37/20, 3rd 34/25, 4th 31/29, 5th 32/37, CWP 61/17

Suggesting that the only differences are to 1st/2nd and final drive (which affects all ratios)

EDIT - found some more detailed info here: http://www.205gti.com/techgearboxUK.htm

You are most unlikely to be able to change one gear ratio anyway, as the layshaft in gearboxes is usualy in one piece, so you have to change all the gears or none of them.
