this is something i can never grasp, maybe because ive never had a noisy card/s
but surely if your playing games, the sound from the game drowns out the fan noise ?

I don't have a problem with noisy cards myself, christ I have an original 480 with the standard heatsink on it, hardly one of the worlds quietest cards!

I was merely having a little sarcastic dig at the AMD zealots who slated the 480 for having a noisy fan, but then seem to conveniently forget about it when AMD release something that's even noisier...

I did (when i had a noisy card) no matter how loud the speakers were playing because of different frequencies and quiet parts. Noise pollution from the fan noise reduces clarity as well.

Seems to depend on what games you play.

6990 is louder & runs hotter but is £60-£100 cheaper.

I'd spend 30mins going through the reviews gathered here & look at the results for the games you play :

a 6990 isn't that loud tbh..

mine gets to about 75-78c while gaming and can just about hear the fan over my cpu fan.

I'm not going to over volt so not worried about blowing it up, all the reviews show the 590 being the quicker of the 2, is the 6990 faster when overclocked then or am I reading the wrong reviews?

Its a draw only when the reviews are viewed through Nvidia tinted glasses.

Pretty much all the reviews i have read show the 6990 to be the superior card when it comes to horse power. I think 3dmark11 tells a story as the 6990 is faster but from what i have seen its usually nv cards that are faster in this bench. I could be wrong though because a lot of results i have seen on here probably feature high overclocks.
