SimonMaltby said:Ram has arrived.
the chips are displayed here... they seem to be the same as on the geil 8000 ram... which explains the good clocks.

Thanks for the replies guys. Deal sealed, order placed.Gibbo said:Plus in a months or so time we shall be in peak season which will mean memory prices tend to increase anyway, so now is looking to be a good time.
martianrobot said:Well, I just did the exact same thing and I've got the exact same spec as you as regards CPU, mobo, memory and graphics card - and it POSTed but then crashed and rebooted before Windoze started to boot!
What am I doing wrong here?
I've disabled C1E, Thermal Monitor, EIST, Virtualisation, Fan Control Method etc
Did you make any changes to any other voltages?
God I'm such a noob.
gam3r said:Hmm, first of all when i installed this ram my windows was screwy, so i reinstalled windows then installed my chipset drivers one by one(none of that express install crap) then upgraded the bios to F3d installed all my other drivers and then overclocked. I didn't make any changes to other voltages mate, everything on stock apart from +0.3V to the Vdimm and FSB 400 and memory multi to 2. I am using the purple sata ports(gigabyte controled, not ich8)
Hope you get it working
Gibbo said:If thats the case then the pricing on these things is mental.
No wonder GeIL of rapidly increasing their pricing, I am guessing they've realised that there pricing is well out to the competition. As like I say the G.Skill and Corsair equivalent parts are like $80 more per module to buy in and the GeIL kits do seem superior.![]()
martianrobot said:Hmmm... reinstall Windows. And drivers. Again. Bleurgh.
Anyway, I was wondering - I set the timings in the hidden MIT options for CAS latency, RAS-CAS delay, RAS precharge and Cycle time (Tras)... but there were plenty of other options there which I left at Auto etc. Is there anything I should change there?
I'm using the F2 bios but Gigabyte sent me the updated one today to help with the problem I was having with G.skill NR ddr-800 ram I originally got but returned to OcUK. I was going to install it but then read elsewhere of the problems quite a few people were having with it.
I'm using purple port for my SATA2 disk too. Though it's running in IDE mode instead of SATA/AHCI because that was causing my IDE DVD-RW to run in slooooow PIO mode instead of DMA.
Er.... I just been thinking....
Power.
I have an Antec NSK4400 case with a 380w SmartPower PSU. It doesn't cause me any problems with what I've been running up to now, OCing my cpu to 2.33ghz with the DDR2-667 and playing games with my X1800XT.
But perhaps that might cause me some problems in further OCing?
I hope not, seeing as OcUK are using the same case and PSU in an overclocked AMD system they sell. I know these Core 2 Duo's run at a much lower wattage than previous CPUs too.
Jabbs said:I picked up a x1800xt for me bro and he on a a64 am2 3800 single core, 2 gig ram and the usual stuff, the chap behind the counter at overs advised to use nothing less than a 400w psu on this setup.
gam3r said:Hmmm, 380W sounds a little on the low side but it is a good quality PSU. I would advise you use a better psu. As for the memory settings, i only changed the first 4 settings to give me 4-4-4-12 and left the rest on auto.
martianrobot said:Hmmm.... 380w runs fine for me though... and the Antec Smartpower it is a quality PSU, innit? Well, as far as I know. And these new Intels do use a lot less watts.
I'll keep plugging away at the BIOS and if all else fails I'll try attaching a 500w one I've got in another system... it's a Suncom cheapy but it is said to have a 90% efficiency rating.
Jabbs said:Me bro had a 375w antec and as i said above was told its not upto the job.

E6600 or E6400 ?!!

HIS ICEQ3 X1900XT
Geil 2x1 GB 6400![]()
Seagate 7200.10 320GB

Samsung 940BW 19" Widescreen
Thermaltake Toughpower 650W
still cant decide between the cpus (big £ diff between 6600 and 6400 is that worth it?) and the sound card...suggestions? anything else missing (apart from the usuals dvd drive etc)
cheers!
SimonMaltby said:Well my results proved somewhat disapointing i'm afraid.
Before i start i would point out that i have become aware that my motherboard bios is very poor when it comes to RAM settings. Asus only let you set the 4 main variables. I have discovered that, like AMD64 memory settings, some of the lesser variables can be as important for good clocks.
With that in mind my comparison relates to my existing OCZ EL Plat 6400 4,5,4,15 2.1v which i run at 360FSB 4:5 which is 900Mhz using stock settings.
Onto the Geil results:
I had the following success when posting into the bios....
1. 360 FSB Ram 1:1 DDR720 at 3,4,4,10 2.2v
2. 360 FSB Ram 4:6 DDR1080 at SPD (board reads as 5,6,6,18 - board issue) 2.2v
3. 360 FSB Ram 4:5 DDR900 at 4,4,4,12 2.1v
Memtest failed with ALL of the above. This is due i think to the way the Asus mobo sets the hidden ram variables... very poor.
Windows ran at:
1. 360FSB 1:1 DDR720 3,4,4,10 2.2v and if i changed the ram settings in windows it run to 390FSB DDR780 - would not do 400FSB DDR800
2. 360FSB 3:4 DDR960 SPD 2.2v
3. 360FSB 4:5 DDR900 4,4,4,12 2.1v
I see such a small improvement in real useability over my ocz the only difference 4,4,4,12 instead of 4,5,4,15. Although the OCZ will not post above DDR975 so there is hope.
I think the Geil is good for DDR1000 at 4,4,4,12 and possibly DDR1100 at 5,5,5,15 but until this board is sorted i'm wasting my time with it.
I have now put the ram in with the OCZ and its stable at 360FSB 4:5 DDR900 4,5,4,15 2.1v so i now have 4GB ram in the system. I'm happy with that until the bios is sorted.
Summary:
Not the fantastic ram i was seeking, but as good as my OCZ, which is on a par with most Gskill HZ i have seen.... so excellent value for money.
