General studies exams

Haha yeah it is a bit pointless, my UCAS offer said in bold red letters that general studies was not accepted.

For one exam I wrote an essay about chicken run. Got me 30% in the end. Managed 70% and 100% in the other 2 apparently. It wasn't worth revising for though as I had real subjects to prepare for.

What the point of it if uni's don't recognise it?

I think some courses will accept it at less prestigious universities, or if you are very close to getting let in but out by a grade in one course then it may go in your favour depending on the course/uni.

I wrote about how hot one of the visiting invigilators was, and how it was unfair that I was only 17 at the time.

Managed to get a D.

I believe colleges receive funding against how many students and how many exams they take.

I had a physics paper immediately prior to my AS GS exam, as they were handing out the GS papers I stood up and walked out to go to the pub. I think I got an X.

Its because when the tables come round the schools can say they got x number of a level passes without specifying what they were in, so it looks good.

We had to do it at as and a level, I wrote about the welsh shagging sheep and got a B...

Had to do it at A-level. Bit pointless as it doesn't count for any universities worth going to, but then it was a 3 hour exam with no revision needed and looks nice on the CV, so who cares really? Just a way for schools to bump up their number of A-levels/grades.

my 6th Form didn't even bother with it, we never did anything "general studies" related at all.

although, for some reason, weekly assembly was called general studies on the timetables

If it were harder (like what it used to be:rolleyes:) and we still had the old University based exam boards then it may be accepted as is was in the 80's.

Personally I turned up for the two 3 hour exams answered the 80% which wasn't foreign languages and got a A (which required 77%+ back in 1987). I failed Geography with an N but still got into University. If I had known I could have saved a lot of effort and not even bothered turning up to the Geography exams which were a nightmare.

I still want to know how you can 'study' General Studies you either take an interest in the world or not!

Clitheroe Royal Grammar made us do it. I think we did out best to write random words throughout. I think I still passed somehow though.

I totally agree it's rubbish. I think ours was 90% religion based which I HATE profusely anyway. Waste of time but kept me out of trouble I suppose!

yeah theres a couple of types of general studies, the school down the road from me did 3 multiple choice papers on science, maths, and something else, which would have been way more fun and bloody easy. our school did 3 essay based question papers on moral dilemmas and religion.
I wrote a 2 page report in each exam detailing why general studies was a waste of my time, included absolutely nothing relevant to the answer of any question and got a D. close to a C as well, thankfully i didn't get it cos if you got a C you had to do the A2 as well.

We were meant to have to do it, but I told my head of sixth form that I wasn't going to, and instead put the time towards doing the Engineering Education Scheme. This was much more useful, since it was about the only thing they asked about in my interview for uni.

Bah i did it at AS and A level....

AS i used the maths paper as revision for my C1 paper and the rest were just comedy moments (trying to spell out words in teh multiple choice bit).

Alevel we had a class on it first thing monday morning, which was hilarious as there was 9 of us with a woman who should have been teaching 6 year olds not 11-18 year old (especially immature 18year olds). For the final exam i had to identify the bits of a sewing machine, which took a few mins to sort out some thing funny, then i left after about 15 mins to go revise for my real exams.

Got a D overall, queens specifically said no general studies, so that made me feel ok

This was the only benefit of not receiving EMA, I skipped tutorial and general studies.

Exactly, what are people moaning about? It's an A-level for almost no effort, that while hardly the most prized, still might be used to differentiate you against someone else.

Waste of time? No, that'd be turning upto the exam, making a half assed effort, and getting a poor grade.

A completely useless qualification. Why on earth it exists I have no idea.
Because it shows you aren't a social spacktard, have interests outside of your subjects and are capable of writing about them.

If employing someone I'd take a decent GS grade into account for sure.

For some reason I tried at AS level, somehow got an A.

A level, however, I wrote about my severe disliking of Tony Blair - swearing included - and got a fail. As did 90% of the year, the head of Sixth Form sent them all back to be re-marked as he didn't believe we all failed.

We all set each other tasks to write about certain things, off the top of my head the list included;
Pies, Aliens, Our PE Teacher, The weird woman who monitored the exam halls, some lad who had crashed his car the other day, there were loads more!

I did this many years back now. The school/6th form forced us to take them. Got an A, easy as you like and I think the UCAS points came in handy as my other grades were....not great, to say the least. If I were to try and get into Uni these days, I doubt I'd be accepted.
