German Grand Prix 2011, Nürburgring Circuit - Race 10/19

Thats my afternoon sorted! I assume all reg changes have been postponed to 2014 now (both aero and engine)?

I hope so, but knowing the FIA, they'll throw some last minute changes for 2012 once this season is over for the teams to panic over.

Also, Trulli is sitting out this race and Karun Chandhok is taking his place.

I was expecting him to be in the car in India, but not Germany. Trulli should be back at the next race when the updated power steering is in place.

First quick flip through.

Engines will be able to be started from inside the ****pit with no additional equipment needed.
KERS capacity doubled.
Narrower front wing and simpler endplates and flaps.
And yet another weight increase - 660kg now.
And another - minimum weight for KERS and Engine is now 155kg. Up from 95kg for the engine alone.
KERS only in the pit lane.
8 speed gearboxes only.
V6 will be a fixed 90° angle with the turbo inside the V and the exhausts outside.

Meh...

Will the engine start be performed by the KERs?
Narrower front wing makes sence, Schumi keeps losing too many :p
8 speed boxes is reffering to 7 forward 1 reverse right?

I missed the KERS in the pitlane bit, wheres that?

The rest is all stuff we already knew. Narrower simpler front wings, V6 1.6 litre Turbos @15,000rpm and more KERS.

1) Seems that way
2) May make the cars look a touch prettier.
3) 8 forward, 1 reverse.

Nope, 8 forward gears.

Cars now have the ability to start on their own, so no retirements due to stalling theoretically, anti-stall never quite sorted that out previously.

There's one reg to do with the gearboxes that worries me. Specifying the gear ratios before the first event of the year.

Using the same ratio's for the entire year? Or specifying each races before the season starts?

If it is the former then Monaco could be quite interesting!

P.S. this discussion ought to be in a new thread really.

Rules seem pretty good to me. Especially min weight for kers and kers for pit lane. Makes it an integral part that has to be designed properly.

Nothing about rear wing?

No idea, haven't looked at it yet, just going by fiibsters post.

Found it:

5.18 Starting the engine :
It must be possible for the driver to start the engine at any time when seated normally at the wheel and without any external assistance.

5.19 Electric mode :
The car must be run in electric mode (no ignition and no fuel supply to th0e engine) at all times when being driven in the pit lane.

I know they toyed with this idea with Le Mans cars a while back. Its an interesting rule, as coupled with the KERS button on track, the teams have to build a KERS system that can provide instant, short burst power, and yet also provide sustained low power to allow the car to drive a few hundred meters at 60mph in the pitlane.

KERS is currently delivered "through" the engine, ie the crankshaft transmits the power through to the drivetrain.

Does that mean that in the pits they are going to have to run the engines with all valves held open? Hell of a waste of energy if so?
