German Grand Prix 2011, Nürburgring Circuit - Race 10/19

KERS is currently delivered "through" the engine, ie the crankshaft transmits the power through to the drivetrain.

Does that mean that in the pits they are going to have to run the engines with all valves held open? Hell of a waste of energy if so?

I'd hope not, for that exact reason. It suggests the engine will be off totally, so i'd hope the KERS could power the axle in isolation from the engine.

Either is stupid.

Agreed, although it would have to be the second wouldn't it? (I'd hope so anyway)

No one setup can work on both a circuit with huge long straights, and well Monaco lol. You would have the cars maxing out half way through the main straights!

mclaren really need a win this weekend.

i atleast hope someone beats the red bulls.

and great news for chandock i bet he wont moan about the power steering constantly.

Germany preview - home heroes out to halt Ferrari
A whole slew of intermixing factors will ensure that this weekend’s German round, the Formula 1 Grosser Preis Santander von Deutschland 2011, will be a gripping affair as the race returns to the Nurburgring.

Chandhok to replace Trulli at the Nurburgring
Karun Chandhok is to get a race outing with Team Lotus in Germany this week, with Jarno Trulli standing aside to give the Indian driver his first full Grand Prix weekend since he competed for HRT at last year’s Silverstone round.

Drivers will only be able to use DRS once per lap during the German Grand Prix.

But they will be able to deploy it heading towards one of the prime overtaking spots on the track – the Veedol chicane.

The FIA has confirmed the DRS detection zone will be on the approach to the Kumho-Kurve (turn ten). Drivers will then be able to activate their rear wings shortly after the exit of the Bit-Kurve (turn 11).

They will then be able to keep them open all the way up to the braking zone for the chicane. Here’s a diagram showing the positioning of the zone:
