Germany Coup Attempt Foiled

Germany has been letting the far right get away with too much the last decade or so. There is a small but growing amount of far right / conspriacy theorist nutters mixed in with full on Nazi's and not very nice people. Many are out in Eastern German in smaller towns, but they like to travel to places like where I live to try and stir up trouble. AfD hasn't helped - of course not all supporters are that way inclined but you'll find that all of these folk support them.

Glad to see they stopped this, it is serious (despite the numbers count). We're seen in the past what small armed groups are capable of.

I never knew Germany had quite so many polorised views until I moved here (far left and far right). Something to be very wary of, especially considering Germany's past.

And I was being totally serious in calling you a wise poster Tony...

If you actually believe that 25 loons can take over Germany just like that then you're getting a bit carried away with media hype as a few others are prone to doing.

They thought just like the nutters in the USA that you support thought they had a chance of overthrowing their governemt by violent action. Just because it would never have been possible doesnt mean that wasnt their end game.

The nutters that I support?

Tony, I know you're a bit slow at times but my positon is that those nutters were a bunch of LARPing idiots.

That is what sort of makes the point. Nutters thinking they were about to overthrow the government. Calling them LARPers is a bit of an insult to anyones intelligence.

What's the reaction like in Germany?

I'm guessing it's not like it is on this forum where people are finding it funny and being dismissive/ignorant of a group of extremists who planned an attack?

Kinda begs the question of how many people are required for a coup?

Only needs 1 to start it, of course more means more chance to influence enough areas to make it more likely to succeed.

The question that follows is generally how the armed forces view it afterwards. The senior forces have the ability to make or break it. (Hence why most successful have generally already garnered support from the military)
If they support it (for whatever reason) then it will likely succeed.
If senior armed forces support it then it would require the rank and file to object who may be unaware of exactly whats going on anyway.

It's being taken very seriously indeed. These are not just right wing people with an axe to grind about lockdowns or similar, as I said many are well known (or now it seems not so well know) full on Nazis. As in German for pure Germans and use force to obtain their goals.

If their plan was indeed to storm the Bundestag building, 50 fully armed persons would do a great deal of harm. Who knows the result of that. I should think they have become emboldened after the efforts in the US.

One of those arrested is a former AfD MP who was formally a judge in Berlin.

Don't quote me on the exact number, but if memory serves, Hitler's Beer Hall Putsch very nearly succeeded with only around 600 Brownshirts.
Thing is with todays surveillance technology, every edge political party gets infiltrated with undercover cops, GCHQ snoop everything. I genuinely think a political revolution by force in most western countries is impossible these days.

Even against a military as poorly equiped as Germany, you're still going to need 10,000 plus if you don't have political support. Even then, the country will carry on just fine and the occupied areas just surrounded. Most likely support would rush in form other EU countries.
