As someone who avoided university like the plague (couldn't afford to go and wasn't convinced I needed it), I agree with most of the comments above. University is something that I'd encourage my kids to go to, if I ever have some, but it's not an absolute essential for everyone. Personally I don't think I would have left with a degree anyway, I can't learn something unless I'm interested in it or using it every day. Which is partly why I opted to do an apprenticeship instead.
I haven't encountered any problems in I.T. regarding caps due to a lack of a degree, as most also state "or X years experience". It does mean you have to put the time in though and as most people have said, work your way up.
I wouldnt' say university was a waste of time at all though, you get out of it what you put in. Certainly some degrees have been devalued slightly, but only at certain universities. When I'm interviewing applicants I simply look on the degree as a guarantee of a certain level of intelligence, I'm generally not fussed what the degree is in. Some of the best I.T. folks I know have no formal qualifications in I.T.
