Get me in a fast car again...

Subaru Legacy B4 RSK. Very fast twin turbo mid to high 20 mpg. A nice one can be had for £5k. MIII's look the nutz in IMHO

?I would go for the Leon personally, either the FR or Cupra, I like both :)

This is what i am veering towards at the moment. The Cupra. It seems to tick all the boxes, even though i'm not totally convinced by the interior (in the looks department).

I think with 240bhp (same engine as the Audi S3 but with slightly less power) i wouldnt feel dissapointed, speed wise, after the ST.

MK2 Leon Cupra is a good shout

Indeed. I think it would have to be yellow as well :D

Only down side is, is that there arent many 2007 ones ( i.e. in my price range) for sale at the mo. There are couple down in southampton but i live in the north of surrey.

Might take a trip down if nothing else comes up over the next week or two and they are still for sale.

Have you been in a mk2 leon? I found the interior worse in person than it looks even in photos which is a rare thing. Shame as like you I quite fancied the rest of the package.

In saying that I seem to have odd taste as I really quite like the interior of my civic whereas it seems to get slated by most everyone else

No , i havent viewed one yet.

I don't like the interior, but then that is the only negative against it. It isnt terrible looking but i prefer the interior in my current shape civic. The seats look very nice in the Cupra, and the dash and steering wheel are ok. It is just the centre console that looks really naff.

None of the cars on my shortlist have everything i want, and for my budget, something is going to have to give!

The pre-facelift interior isn't too appealing but the Cupra has more going for it than the interior. Face lift models are better but cost more. You can easily tell a facelift from pre-facelift as the mirrors are larger on the facelift and the rear lights are a different shape. There are other tweaks but less noticable at first.

My mate had one, from new. The first White one in Scotland at the time, he was proud of this for some reason :p. He stupidly gave me a drive, amazing car, power is there all the time the brakes are insane. I like them very much, just a bit too 'refined' for me.

Not a bad choice at all, be my first test drive then I would go out and buy the Megane. :)

Mazda MPS is an option but i have heard the torque steer is very bad ( newer ones have an LSD though and are better, is that right?)

Both have LSDs and I barely notice the torque steer. The only time it becomes an issue is if you push it hard on a poor road surface.

The 3 MPS is unbelievably quick (~400nm torque) and can be mapped fairly cheaply to 290ps+.

Older ones are cheap to buy owing to the relative obscurity and high tax band (over £400 up to 2010 model). Fuel consumption is as you'd expect; mine is 28mpg over the 30k miles since delivery, motorway runs get about 35mpg.

Biggest plus for me is that the Mk 1 MPS is very Q. Without the badges it just looks like a more tasteful Mazda 3 Sport so I get very little attention, yet away from the line it'll keep up with my boss's Cayman.

Are you sure about that? What's "fairly cheap"? When I looked at both the 3 and the 6 there was no suggestion that this figure was easily obtainable.

That's actually very good

BBR will remap 3s and 6s to 290hp/330ft.lbs for £550 inc removal of torque and speed limiters. Stock internals.

Not cheap for a remap, but considering how cheap the Mazdas are compared to the competition they do represent a huge performance to price ratio.

Trip computer was 28mpg for a while, has dropped a little recently due to a new slower commute. Mileage drops off the charts in stop-start traffic.

Or just get an FR and remap? Cupra is very high, if not at the top, insurance wise. I also get an average of 30mpg with the occasional hoon :)

But then i will have to pay to get it remapped and pay higher insurance anyway because it will have been tuned....

Rather than faff about with all that, i may as well get the Cupra, which already has the remap and better engine internals ( more similar to the engine in the Audi S3 than the Golf GTI apparantly).

The Cupra also has a few more cosmetic touches.

Drive them both and tell me what difference there are. Maybe on a track you'd notice them, but I certainly couldn't work out why people wouldn't get an FR and map it. But if you want to spend more money on insurance, fuel, etc etc by all means :)
