Getting a decent Master box for ADSL

Now eyeing up the XTE 2005 face plate and thinking about mounting the router downstairs as well. Currently getting about 950Mbps, when I have had 1350Mbps before when it was on the 'bad' master socket and the dodgy extension.

Still a little unsure what to do about the junction box, but hoping further communication with BT and the engineer will actually turn up at some point (he was meant to come on Monday.)
 
All that is doing, is taking the 2 feeds from outside (terminating on the screw posts) and forwarding it to your first socket (via the IDC slots). Nothing more than a joint in the cable. Joint = noise = higher attenuation = less sync speed

Put a master on in it's place and be done with the bodge job.
 
So that box does nothing other than being a connector? No surge protection, capacitance or anything? I can definately remove the junction box entirely and just connect the outside drop wire (from telegraph pole) directly to the BT NTE5 master socket? (I realise the legal issue here).

I'd happily move my nice new shiny master socket without issue I think, I can borrow a Krone tool if the chap is feeling nice.

Want to try this tonight if I can: Can I hook my master socket up to drop wires directly safely? (the incoming copper wires). Is this what happens with new installations?

That's what *some guy I know* has done, works fine. Before the line was really noisy due to the master socket being located at the other end of the house, and wired with cheap cables running next to electrical wires in the walls. had to have a 15dB noise margin. Now it's happy at 3dB. Drop cable goes straight into a Master Socket with an XTE-2005 filtered faceplate.

Might move it above the door in that case, in place of the existing junction box. I will check the master socket now :-) (as long as the wife isn't using the net).
 
Sorry for the late reply.

Yes, those 2 wires simply connect to the rear of the master linebox, then you connect any extension sockets to the front of the faceplate (e.g. that wire that's running along the top of the door)

I'd have the socket above the door, and just pin the RJ11 cable down the frame to a modem below :)
 
Can't do it tonight as wife using the net, but I did cheekily put in my BT-iPlate quickly, and it's reconnected slower d'oh.

Right.. I'll post when I actually DO something else rather than waffling now. I'm gonna check to see if my longest ethernet cable can reach downstairs, and that way I can definately mount the router much closer. Enough of this silly 'might be the junction box' cack.

If you wire it up properly, then you can throw the iPlate.

Nice master linebox, and filtered faceplate should give you the best speed your line can handle.

Do a before and after screenshot of the modem stats page, so you can see any difference in attentuation etc :)
 
Haven't had a chance to replace the junction with the master socket, but I did find an old 350Mhz Cat 5E cable that's about 10 metres long, so I put the router downstairs instead.

Currently my IP Profile (BRAS profile?) is set at 500k thanks to the disconnects. I've tried leaving it off(out) for over an hour and putting it back in, but it's still not playing ball. Think I'll have to call BT again to reset it (Unless it sorts itself out?)

I have had to use DG834G as a switch as my cable wasn't long enough lol.

Update: Seems my BRAS profile has changed itself to 1000K now, so getting about 850Mbps. Still slower than the 950Mbps I was getting with the 10 metre round RJ11 cable, but hopefully it will get better over time. Annoyingly, I can't attach the BT Home Hub V2 to the wall, which is a bit inconvienent.

Well, as per my other thread, I've just murdered/made a decent(ish) 1.8metre shielded cable for connecting directly in the master socket without using a filter (RJ11-to-telephone jack), as the BT Home hub has a telephone output port. I've also made a RJ11-to-RJ11 cable in case I need to use the filter due to problems with the router.

Hoping this will raise the sync speed back upto at least 1476Kbps if not more due to the shorter cable. We'll see.

I still think my junction box is screwed, so still need to decide whether to replace it with a new one or move the master socket into it's position. If I move it, I know the wife won't be happy which is the only reason it's taking me so long lol.

Well my HH doubles as a dect base station, you press the phone button on the side so the wifi and phone light flashes then search for base station on the phone, the access code is usually 0000.

Looking at references to it on the net, I'm not sure if the phone still rings for regular land line calls (which is something I hadn't realised if true!). Will have to check that later.

On my HH it has one phone cable into it which is for both broadband and PSTN, the splitter is inside the hub.

Depends which version you have I guess.
 
I have the V2 home hub.

Modified cable put in and filter removed. Sync speed back up to 1440.

Must admit, it irritates me a little that my neighbour carelessly flings down a netgear router via an extension socket, and is getting a full 1.4Mbps download speed, where as I'm only getting 0.98Mbps and am trying to do everything I can to get it better. (lol @ myself I guess)

I don't know how, but the XTE faceplate gives me a +170kbps connection(on a 4mb line)compared to using the NTE5 test socket !!!?

Might help you as you are very close to syncing at a lower rare with those posted stats, below 1152 you will be on a 500k profile
 
yes, BRAS profile is currently 1000K, I'm hoping it will improve in next few days as the exchange adapts.

I haven't got the XTE-2005 socket yet as I would need it delivered to my workplace, and my workplace don't like private items being delivered, so would need a blank box with 'training material' written on it or something lol. I did ask the main supplier of the XTE-2005, but they said they could deliver it to my work, but would be marked up with their companies standard packaging (they aren't as helpful as OcUK in this regard :-(). I do REALLY want to get this part though.

I will probably keep the BT80A btw... I'm just seeing if I can get a new one, as I think the IDC terminals are a bit damaged on the old one (they look black and mangled).

Bizarre question: Would slightly sanding the drop wire ends result in a better connection?
 
The only way you will get a better connection is to cut out that horrid junction box. Sanding will do nothing.

Just take it off and put a new socket on there.

I'll send you a filtered faceplate :)
