Howdy doody,

I am thinking of getting a 360 Elite however after reading about all the problems that people have been having with the 360 in general i am wondering whether this newer unit is going to be plagued with the same problems?

I am aware that some people have had 360 since launch without problem but in general its comes across as a very unreliable machine.

Any advice when buying one?

Thanks

The newer ones are much better in terms of cooling. You'll also get 12 months straight swap at the retailer, so there is nothing to lose really.
Just get one.

Pretty much every retailer gives a 12 month warranty as standard.

In terms of cooling, Elites are far cooler than the older Xbox's. I'm on an Elite now and it's way way cooler than my previous two.

What places actually do this ? Need to know for when i upgrade to an elite :)

Do the UK's biggest highstreet ing retailer do this ?

Yes, my original one broke within the 1st year and they just swapped it and let me keep the HDD (same as MS would do but you get a new unit back rather then the possibility of a refurb frrom MS). However it is entirely at the retailers discretion after 6 months, so there is no guarantee, despite what others may claim, and you may have to send it back to MS. (This is assuming I am correctly guessing the retailer you are hinting at).

There is no definitive evidence that newer units do not get the dreaded 3 red lights errror (again anyone saying so is misinformed or has read an official Micrsoft source that I am unaware of). If the new ones broke less why do they still give you a 3 year warranty? ;)

If you are the kind of person who would worry about it breaking or get annoyed at being without one whilst it was being repaired (can be 2-3 weeks realistically atm) then this is NOT the console for you. For most products I would not really stand for this, unfortunatley I bought it when it was new and the unreliability was not a known factor, I ended up buying games, accessories etc and got a swapout when it broke in the 1st year, plus I have no problems in exercising my rights in getting a replacement.
Obviously you can minimise this risk by buying from a reputable high street retailer (even if it costs a few quid more than online) and get a replacement (see answer above) in shop rather than deal with Microsoft's shoddy warranty service.
If you don't mind the hassle then go for it. As mentioned you have to balance it against the games you would enjoy and see if that is worth more than the inconvenience. I don't regret buying mine, but if I was buying it again now, I would have the same concerns as you seem to have (i.e no definitive steps have been taken to fix a problem that has now occured for 2 years). Having said that there is so many good deals around at the moment they can make you forget about the hardware problems :)

Have an elite, definitely runs cooler than the earlier 360 versions.

My model has the new cooling system and yes that ing place still offer replacement policy for the first 12 months, so don't worry - be happy.

Is there anyway of checking for the newer cooling system before you get it home and unpack it? Or is it a case that all elites are fitted with it?

Current shopping list:

360 Elite
Extra black wireless controller
wifi adapter
Assassins Creed

Anything else?

For games that come out on the PC as well I wont be getting on the 360 purely because PC games are a hell of a lot cheaper :D (not unless they are better on the 360 or have a longer waiting time for release)

All consoles with HDMI (ergo all Elites) have the new heatsinks. You should be far more concerned with the bundle you get than which batch number etc. :)

Baloney. We base this on the fact that a year ago this forum was full of 'my consoles' broke threads but now there are very few and they are almost always about launch or near launch models. To counter your logic where is your source that current consoles have as high a failure rate? For the record my launch console is still going strong at my brother in laws and my new launch Elite hasn't so much as stuttered.

To the op, there was an issue with early consoles that's cost MS a fortune to fix. Only a fool would think they haven't spend a great deal of time and money removing the problem.

I let this put me off buying a 360 for ages.... Until I give in and got an elite for masseffect.

Go for it some great gamming on the 360

Every console now has the 3 year warranty anyway, not only that, why an elite?

The HD slot and dusj size it the only diff, well, the HD slot isnt a diff now as i have it on my 360 V.2.. I play in HD and i paid 200 for my console brand new from an online shop.. I ever have the new cooling on mine..

Just a waste of money to be honest, no need to get a black one.

The 120GB hard drive will prove very useful when the video marketplace is opened, and also when the downloadable games hit the marketplace.

You say "We base this on the fact that a year ago this forum was full of 'my consoles' broke threads but now there are very few and they are almost always about launch or near launch models."
One year ago people's year old models were breaking (the console has been out 2 years now). The new cooling unit has only been in retail channels in this country for less than 2 months. So how is this a fair comparison? Certainly the initial problem were not seen straightaway when 360 was released so why would you expect the new ones to fail/or not fail any quicker?

I'm not saying the issues is not fixed, I am saying their is no definitive evidence or sources either way. If you find a source from Microsoft that states the official failure figures pre or post improved cooling let me know. Until then you basing the fact the problem is fixed because you have not seen any threads on a 2 ,month old model is flawed logic

Also if the problem is fixed why are Microsoft still giving a 3 year warranty? Good faith?

Because people with old 360's that are still working may still fail.

As far as I know the 3 year warranty is on all new machines as well, although I could be wrong. My point being if the problem is fixed why offer the 3 years on the new models with better cooling (Arcade, HALO3 edition, Elite etc), unless they are not confident that the cooling has fixed the underlying issue.

Either way, I think it is premature for people to assume it is fixed seeing as the newer models have been on sale such a short period of time.
