Hi,

I am getting choppy playback with 720p mkv files (multiple files so not corrupt file problem), I have also tried to play the files in multiple media players and am getting the same problem. I am trying to play it on a 1080p screen using HDMI and a DVI-HDMI converter. My CPU and Graphics card cannot be the bottleneck they are CPU:i7 920, Graphics Card: HIS ATI Radeon HD 4850. Does anyone have any idea?

An I7 system should play 720mkv with little overhead mine plays 1080p with 10% hit on CPU usage ...not sure what codecs you have installed but I'd download the klite codec Pack uninstall all other codecs first restart your system and install it.
You can choose with media player classic or just use media player..:o

What he says, it will GPU offload as well, plus there about a bazzilion different settings if your happy to play.

Also try updating your graphics drivers. I remember a while ago my GPU acceleration stopped working, it had happened after an NVIDIA update. After the next update it worked fine again.
 
Thanks so much for the replies,

However my HDTV is my secondary monitor, and when i drag VLC onto the primary monitor its not choppy but when i put it onto the secondary it starts to get a bit choppy. Could it be the DVI to HDMI converter, or possibly because my GPU has to render things for two monitors simultaneously?

Also how can i check what codecs I already have installed (and possibly remove some) Im running windows 7 64 bit.

Ah yes I had this. The "fix" I found was that instead of spreading my desktop over two monitors (well one monitor and one tv), or cloning them I simply switched displays. I use my TV to watch films, TV, iPlayer etc on (off the PC) but nothing else so I can switch. Basically just using one output at a time, it doesn't matter which connection you have it on, or which way round it is, whatever is the secondry monitor (according to windows) runs like this.

I have two 1920x1200 monitors at work (on a 7 series NVIDIA) and get worse playback issues on ANY video, including youtube, I think it's down to the amount of video memory/GPU performance as it's pushing an awefully big resolution with part of it running a video.

I chose to think of it like playing a game in a window...basically, don't :D

So when you wanted to watch TV, did you unplug your monitor and plug in your TV? because if you just turn off the monitor the GPU still sends display information to it. Also, do you think this is an OS problem or a limitation of the GPU (i.e. only so hard it can work)

I think it's a GPU limitation, however it seemed like windows was the one that decided which monitor the GPU gave more oomph to (main display).

I do (because I still do it) have both screens setup in windows but disable one or the other depending on what I am doing. Takes about all of 15 seconds to do.
 
Try uninstalling your codecs and install the Win7 and x64 codecs from here?

Im not sure how powerful the 4850 but my media center which has Win7 x64, an HD3200, 4gb and i think a 2.9ghz dual core and runs everything effortlessly through Media Center.

Could you tell me how to disable one monitor, without physically taking out the DVI/HDMI cable?

its a filter/codec or something

similar to ffdshow

it allows your mkvs to play in WMP and have explorer thumbnails
its really good imo i used to get stuttering HD playback in windows 7 (was fine in XP) till i installed Haali

just try it trust me you will like it and will solve your problems

I don't have an ATI card so that will probably work for you, however I use either the NVIDIA or Windows screen setup.

I used to use the nvidia one because you ticked one box and unticked another and that was that, however it suddenly started forgetting the resolution and refresh rate of my TV and I would have to re-set it back up.

In windows right click on the desktop, select personalisation (in vista, possibly 7) and then "display settings" and select your TV and untick the boxes. To swap displays you first extend the desktop onto the tv by ticking that box, and then unticking the boxes on the monitor. It's the same thing for going back to the monitor but obviously selecting the monitor instead of the tv.
