getting engaged... where to buy the ring

spending more money than you can afford is the best way to show her you love her.

edit: 1.5k is far too much to spend on a ring

And will set the tone for a wonderful marriage ;).

no no, it's ok - because if anything goes wrong, it can be made better with money. all feelings have a monetary value. I believe the £ -> feelings rate is just below that of the £ -> $

plan to propose to my gf in the next few months, I will not however be spending silly amounts of money on a ring :p

pawn brokers if I can get away with it :p

Well I'm glad Cliff didn't feel the same way as some of you :p It wasn't about how much it cost to him but about getting me a good quality and decent ring. I've worn it for nearly 7 years now :D

I was always told that to get major discounts on Diamonds in Holland you had to be outside from outside the EU (i.e. Middle/Far East, US etc), being an EU resident means you only normally get a small discount on the list price as you still have to pay tax on the diamonds.

If I had the money I would, quite simply I don't. So unless she's willing to wait a long time after the proposal it's not going to happen.

I'd say right now New York is the place to go, make a mini break out of it. Some of my friends have picked up some ridiculous bargains in recent months, Jewellery has always been cheap over there and the current exchange rate makes it a steal.

With the euro being at such a bad exchange rate at the moment, Amsterdam will not seem such a bargain. I lived in north London when we got engaged and we went to one of the Indian jewellers and chose a diamond and the setting separately. This is a good way to buy as you can choose size / quality that you want.

You've answered your own question.. Just pop to Haaten Garden one day and just have a good look. You can get some superb deals because they're all in competition with each other. I got the my wife's from there about 6 million years ago (it seems) :)

good luck.

Why pay a markup of between 100 and 1000% on an engagement ring when you can go to an auction and get the same for about 1/2 to 1/4 the price, or get 2 to 4 time as much for your money??
