Good morning all!

Firstly, I am not a boxer and have never fought before!

However, I am currently undergoing 8 weeks training with the ultra white collar boxing team in preparation for a 3 round fight with another amature fighter at the HG Wells conference centre in Woking on 6/6/2015.

https://www.ultrawhitecollarboxing.co.uk/ Sign up if fancy giving it a go yourself! They have raised over £1million so far :D

The main aim of this is to help raise money for Cancer research UK. A cause which needs little explanation, except to say that its very important work being done with the money raised.

I am 2 weeks into my training and if there is interest I will post about my progress and perhaps provide videos and photo updates after each session. Currently training Mondays and Wednesdays evenings and doing some extra stuff at home in between :)

If you fancy adding to my sponsorship please do, any amount is greatly appreciated!

On the off chance you are local and have nothing to do on the day, tickets for the night are available from me too, at £20. Again, all the money including any tickets sold goes direct to charity! Lots of fights all night and should be very entertaining.

Thanks for your time :)

The training so far has been great fun.

Week 1 sessions were mainly fitness, with some partner based technique work. Working to try and get the basics right before we started to whack stuff. I suppose the idea here is to stop too many early injures from poor form when hitting.

Week 2 we worked on more fitness, and learning to take a jab through the pads. This meant pairing up, and standing with your guard up, and taking a jab to the guard to get used to the actually getting whacked, and learning to keep your guard close. I was paired up with a girl who was closest to me (which i have since discovered is a bad idea!)
This went reasonably well, but part 2 was un-protected body shots. The girl I was paired with was a skinny little thing, but she went to town on my body! I had to stand with my gloves on my head whilst she spent 1 minute nailing my (well hidden) abs into submission.
I then found when it was my turn to hit, that its quite hard to hit a girl! I struggled, and rarely hit above 50% of my max as i was really worried i would damage her! Not being macho, it was just very abnormal being told to whack a girl like that... So have decided to avoid getting paired with girls again. I think it's fairer all round to stick to the same gender for now :)

Next session was a circuit, with pad-work at one station (see the video above) This was my last station, and I was KNACKERED. What I can say with certainty is that bag work is very tiring!! My shoulders/upper arms feel like lead after big bag sessions for a few days.

I am really enjoying it though so far though!

Training at 7pm tonight, and apparently we will be having our first sparring sessions.
Looking forward to it, I think it will make things feel a bit more real, getting whacked whilst in the ring :)
Also I need to get used to wearing a gum shield, I never wore one when playing other sports, because it made me gag, but I am not allowed to box without it!
I managed a few sessions without gagging, as I had other things to think about, which seems to help.
Any tips? I heard cutting back the rear edges can help, but I suppose going too far is going to stop it working..

Good job. I'd try without cutting the gumshield back to start with.
Enjoy the sparring. Keep your guard up, your chin down, and be active when you're within their reach :).

What a great night I had, twenty fights including two women and a midget battle. Event went smoothly and kept every one entertained for four hours.

My side line view, only one of the fights looked like they could have done more than two rounds let alone the three. Most if not all ended up with a cuddly third round, I sort of pin this on every fighter coming out windmilling trying to end it in 10 seconds.

It also was quite clear that hardly any of them had had any good ring practise, the look of fear when they got their first blow to head  Only one fight could have gone on for a fourth round but these guys were super fit.

Notwithstanding it's the only place in this country you can legally kill someone no one come away with anything more than a bloody nose and or split lip, everyone was safe, had a good time and made money for charity.

If you actually do get your face bashed in and post said video of face being bashed in, I will donate.

I was going to do this, but due to an injury I couldn't fight on the night.

Did all the training and i still train. Take before and after photos you will be amazed how much you trim up.

Keep them hands up and throw them jabs

I had my first amateur boxing fight on St George's day, a white collar event. Knocked him out in 65 seconds ha!

Was a fantastic night and the training is so much fun! Good luck!

You tend to find that at these White Collar events.
Either a pansy fest where no real power is dealt, Or one guy turns the other into mince meat.

My night had 15 bouts, I was the only one who stopped someone. Others went the distance and there were quite a few draws.

Some impressive injuries ranging from fractured wrist, broken nose, and general bruising.

Was my first ever event though so I'm not talking from a lot of experience :)

EDIT: best bit of advice I can give you besides the usual chin down guard up, is just constantly pop off jabs and 1/2 combo. Don't try anything fancy like hooks or upper cuts. If during the fight he opens up to them or an opportunity presents itself crack on, but don't look for it or try and set it up. Jab straight, jab straight, jab, jab straight. Remembering to constantly out after you get a combo off.

Jab, Jab, move in as you straight, move out, back to jab.

Thanks for the advice peeps!

Did a big shoulder/hands up session yesterday. Its always surprising how tiring it is holding your hands up for so long especially when punching all the time! Afterwards, we did 5 3min rounds of sparring and my arms and lungs were BURNING!

Its funny, as I always considered myself pretty fit, but the intensity of the situation forces you to maintain the effort levels for longer and in different way to what you are used to, and as such you end up really REALLY tired. I can see why boxers have to be so fit, and how specific the fitness type is.

The sparring sessions were great. I was concentrating on my defence and working on getting used to getting hit on the guard. I found that always moving forward put my partners off, and although you get hit a lot on the guard in the process, it seems to open up counter punching opportunities. Although, I am a bit slow to see them and react to take effective advantage right now. I guess it will come with practice.

2 of my sparring rounds were against non-noobs, which showed me a lot where the holes are, and punished me when a hand dropped down.

Felt like I learned a fair bit yesterday, and looking forward to more open sparring :D

OUCH
Spleen shot... Man down!
My god, that is painful!
We were an odd number today so, in the ring sparring with a non-white collar boxer. I think he lifted me off my feet with a body shot. Took a knee and wheezed like an asthmatic Mr muscle.
Now I know what that feels like, I am never leaving that shot open again. I can barely bend tonight, sleeping is going to be tough!
I think I realised today how hard this could be.
Im off to try and sleep, it's going to be hard!!

Still, all for a good cause :D

I had this done to me to. Always remember to keep breathing whilst boxing. Every punch you throw exhale.

The winding comes from receiving a body shot with a lung full of air. It's, as you found out, seriously painful.

It is hard to remember to breathe though especially if you are on the defence as you just want to tense up.

Keep up the training and keep learning. It's definitely worth it all at the end.

Yup, so it turns out that shot slightly tore a muscle in my rib-cage according to the doctor :( The pain last night was pretty epic, and I have had my fair share of injuries!

So I am supposed to rest for 5 days. I figure that means since the injury, so I am already 2 days down, and good for training on Monday! I think a few light shadow boxing rounds, and some skipping before should not do too much damage!

Just going to keep my left elbow well tucked in, and be very vigilant about that shot for sparring on Monday..

Guy shouldn't be going that hard in sparring surely? Especially if he has that much more experience than you - sounds like it was a bit of a dick move.
