Hey,

I'm intending to upgrade to an i7 but seeing as the new sandybridge is having problems i'm stuck between buying this rig(I have case/gpu/SSD)

Or waiting for better sandybridge boards

Thinking about changing the board for either a Asus P6X58D-E or a Asus Rampage II Extreme

What would you guys do? Wait for the new sandybridge mobos?
Any idea when they're coming in.

The PCs going to be used to gaming, maybe trifire as I happen to have 3 5850s

Just get a SB kit now, the i7 2600k will be much better than the old i7, the issues with the boards are rare and minor and are covered by warranty anyway, also if you do go asus they provide 1st year advance replacement

Explain to me the actual problem.

I know that the 6gb/s ports are unaffected.
I have 1 160gb SSD, 1 1tb storage drive and a sata CD/dvd drive.

I would put my HDD/SSD on the sata3 ports for safety adn the DVD drive on the others.

What you mean by 1st year advance replacement? So when it gets fixed I can get it replaced to a newer fulyl functional one?

The potential problem as outlined by Intel® is as follows:-

In some cases, motherboards featuring the 6 Series Chipset (P67 & H67) that have Sata devices connected to ports 2-5 could potentially degrade over time.
Motherboards with devices connected to Ports 0 & 1 remain unaffected or using the 6G ports.
PLEASE NOTE THERE IS NO POTENTIAL ISSUE TO SANDYBRIDGE PROCESSORS, this communication refers only to Sandybridge motherboards using P67 & H67 chipset ONLY

Advance replacement means theyll send you a new mobo before you have to send your old one back, so your computer gets no down time, they send the new one, you swap your old one out, then send them it

The advanced replacement only matters if I get the problem?

Should I just go for the i5 2500k instead?
There is a 50% chance I could be doing trifire so I don't know if i'll need the i7 just for more ooomph

AFAIK you can elect to get a replacement anyway, as the problem may not arise for a period of years, so once the B3 revision boards are available around Apr time, you can apply for a new one, as I understand it
Yeah if its just gaming then an i5 is perfectly adequate, i7 offers very little

You're a god amongst men!
In such few replies you've helped me so much :D
Well looks like i'm going crossfire as even the most expensive Asus board only supports crossfire. I'm stuck between this one Asus P67 Sabertooth and this one Asus P8P67

Could you tell me if I need the sabertooth or not?

Thanks again!

You dont want the Sabretooth as it only has 2 PCI-E x16 slots, so to run 3 gfx cards you need either the PRO or deluxe, but be aware the 3rd slot runs at x4
Asus' boards do support SLi as well as Xfire

There was an article which showed that the performance difference from x16 to x8 was only 2%, and from x16 to x4 only 4%, so its not exactly crippling
Be aware that RAM like the Vengeance which has large fins may be restrictive on fitting larger coolers, or you may have to run them in RAM slots 2 and 4 as opposed to 1 and 3 as 1 may be blocked, imo youd be better with the XMS3 or Geil kits to avoid this issue
No running 2x4 would not have any effect, but running 4x2 would

Right so i've got the
Asus P8P67 Deluxe
i5-2500k 3.3ghz OEM (As i'm buying another cooler)
Titan Fenrir ( Anything better for the same price? £33)
corsair HX850w
corsair XMS3 2x2gb 1600mhz ram
