getting old and broken

ouch. has to be the shortest come back tour ever :(
hope it's healed ok now
Thanks. 95% as good as it will ever get. It doesn't bend back fully as my left hand. And if i use it excessively or to hold my full weight e.g. One-handed side plank, it gets a touch sore after a while.

Fast heading towards 50 now but in pretty good shape. Been into a ton of things over the years and have settled on bodyweight style training, bit of mobility and 5k running.

Ultimately I just don't want to be a porker or get injured.

I am mindful that excess cardio can reduce muscle mass (willing to be corrected on this ?)
I'm curious as to what this is based on? Sure, I've lost muscle mass since cycling a lot, but that's more about cutting calories and losing weight all round. Some of that weight will be muscle. Do you have a link to where this is talked about cardio actually reducing muscle mass?

Having turned 50 this year, it does feel like it's been a gradual deterioration over the last 10 years or so.On the one hand, I've never been as aerobically fit as I am now, on the other hand it does feel like my body is falling to pieces. It seems far too easy to tweak a muscle with a simple movement.

The worst thing is, I badly injured my right knee 30 years back, then the left knee 4 years back, but in the last three weeks both have really flared up to the point it's generally painful walking around. I had them scanned yesterday and will see what the specialist wants to do with them tomorrow, but I've never felt so old... hobling around. It worries me if I had to run for some reason now, I couldn't. It also worries me that it might impede on my cycling.

In my mid sixties now and previous decades worth of lifting weights and other forms of exercise has not bode well overall for me.
If I could have changed one aspect of that, it would have been too accept that moderation and rest periods are most important.
Injuries, to a degree, were a factor over the years. Doing what I wanted, rather than what I perhaps should, often prevailing.
I have had various surgeries, including my back. My left knee needs replacing, at some point.
Osteoarthritis, established now in various joints. Thumbs and toes, and joints in between.

Dealing with daily pain is a way of life now. Moderation and limited activities.
I understand for many it is not like that. I am really pleased, if you are fortunate in that way.

Being too competitive, not with others but myself, has, I feel, contributed to this situation.

Such is life :)

i had to have a bursal cyst removal over 10 years ago on my right knee.. was a shame as that was the end of what was the fittest 18 months of my life (running 6 miles a minimum of 3 days a week and whilst i wasnt fast it was always under an hr - PB was 45mins .... however the knee thing stopped me running for months and i never really got back into it after that........ unfortuntely i have and likely always will have a stupid appetite and once i go off the rails i REALLY go off the rails (i am obsessive in other things as well, its a poor character trait) and without the running burning the calories to keep the weight off i soon spiralled back to an unhealthy mess..... which peaked at the end of last year with the realisation my boy was heading in my direction.

i am not going to try running again, at least untill i lose more weight but swimming is low impact and is helping...... but racket sports i genuinely enjoy its just a shame my body does not seem to be quite ready for those either yet - but i wont give up on that.
I literally loath the gym or gym type exercises.... so that is a none starter for me.

A wonderful thread for all us older people to come and moan about our ailments, give me a few days to put all mine in order then I'll get back to you:)
I'd suggest writing them down, you'll no doubt forget a couple

The most useful thing I've found getting older, is to abide by that adage used in olden times, "A Guinness a day, helps you work rest and play".

Works for me. :)

Turning 50 in November.....
I've been lifting weights 3-4 times a week for donkeys years, nothing too excessive but consistent none the less, I have a few issues, like noisy knee joints, pins and needles in my arms on occasion, minor aches and pains now and then.
I'm sure the positives outweigh the negatives but some times I wonder if I'm getting too old for it and need take up swimming or something instead.......

I will be 53 on my next birthday, I have played basketball all my life and at the end of the 2018/2019 season decided that the 2019/2020 season would be my last. I was sore all the time. After games I couldn't walk properly for a day or two. I wasn't getting injured enough to stop playing, but had constant aches and pains. As for playing two games in one day, at tournament or whatever, forget it, It would be just too painful!!

We all know what happened in 2020, Covid and lockdown. During the first few months of lockdown I kept myself in shape by doing some body weight training, light cardio, stretching and foam rolling etc. But, I had still little aches and pains. Walking up and down stairs was hard on the knees etc. I just thought these were things I had to live with as I got older because of the 35+ years of basketball. However, because of boredom during lockdown I was doing a lot of internet browsing, more than I normally would and found a Youtube channel run by a guy called Tom Morrison. Who is a big believer in Mobility. After watching a few of his videos and looking at this website, I decided to purchase his Mobility program(It's called the Simplistic Mobility Method) And it's been one of the best things that I have ever bought.

I started doing the program 4 or 5 times a week. And, no lie, it was really hard. I thought I was a reasonably fit guy, but this program killed me in the beginning. But I stuck with it and after a few months the changes that I noticed in myself were amazing. No aches or pains, no problem walking up and down stairs. The good thing about the program, is that once you can do all the drills to a reasonable level, you can cut down the number of times you do it in a week. Like now I am only doing it once a week and it's keeping me in good shape, mobility wise.

In fact, the program worked so well for me that I went back playing basketball after lockdown. Not only playing basketball, I have also started playing Pickleball too. I play basketball 3/4 times a week. I play pickleball 2/3 times a week. Three times a week in mornings, I do strength training(mainly body weight stuff) and do mobility work once a week, twice if I need it. I take one rest day, usually Sunday. But once the basketball season starts, I take a rest day before games. I am able to train harder now than I was 10 years ago, all because of doing the mobility program.

My advise to anyone here with aches and pains, anyone who is doing cardio or weights, is to get some kind of mobility program in place. Be it Yoga, the SMM or whatever, but get a guided program until you know what you are doing. It's like weightlifting, form is everything. It's the little changes in how do you are doing the exercises can make the most difference. It's so easy to cheat doing mobility work. Sometimes people don't even realise they are cheating, it's just their body compensating for a weakness. That's why it's so important to have a guide to start off.

Definitely agree with the above. Some kind of mobility will help immensely especially if you're running or hitting weights. No point looking buff if you can't even touch your toes and it will catch up with you eventually if you neglect it.

Bit of strength, bit of cardio and bit of mobility and you'll be okay.

Cycling, take up cycling.

Minimum stress on your joints, great exercise and it gets you places!

This is a myth. So don't worry about that. Cardio actually helps.
Wasn't really sure but I defo don't want a runners , cyclists physique you know , the scrawny type , my miles are low impact coastal path walking
Really getting into strength now though and as said I am lucky? That nothing hurts

Do some callisthenics 2-3 times a week, it's completely free and very simple. 30 mins each time.

I'm in my 40s but consistently being active using all those joints throughout the week makes all the difference.

51, Started couch to 5k. Now running 5k's (indoor on a commercial treadmill)
Drove from Liverpool to Portsmouth to catch the ferry for our euro road trip and i've got Achilles tendonitis now... From driving!!! What the actual ****. We'd brought all our running gear for our 6 week trip and I've not managed to run once.. Just on the elliptical trainer at the villa and now gone back a week or two.

In my 30's that would have meant an afternoon off........
