Two years ago we bought a Z4 3.0 and love it but now we're going the completely opposite direction. As we're mostly motorway cruising these days plus the whole time we have had the Z4 it's not been thrashed, just used as a normal every day car, it seems a complete (although awesome) waste!

Having looked at various options of high mpg comfortable cars I come to everyone here to see what suggestions come up. So far (in random order)...

Golf bluemotion
Skoda Fabia VRS
Toyota auris hybrid
Good solid old merc
Honda Insight

I love cars and still want a Koenigsegg CCXR :) but right now we just want a really comfortable, easy to maintain high mpg cruise mobile!

All the cars in your list bar the Merc are crap.

Seriously, the EcoMuppet cars are for company car drivers - lowest tax. For private buyers they are totally pointless. Yipee! My car does 70mpg on the EU extra urban cycle! Shame it cost £15,000! Doh.

Do you NEED a high MPG car? What is the actual cost of fuel to you? How many miles do you do?

Whats your budget?

If your budget is Skoda vRS diesel money a big wafty diesel is probably a bill-ridden nightmare waiting to happen. But if its 5 figures, then something with a Silver Star on the front is probably a good bet. The new shape C Class starts at about £16k, though an older E might be more comfortable.

New C Class is very comfortable and looks great. They even have a good smaller sized petrol engine option that is capable enough to meet your needs.

haha, I can stop looking at the EcoMuppet cars then. :D I guess really we would want to do a swap with the Z4 money wise so around the £10k area.

ECO car we were thinking more along the lines of buying it, saving the money in fuel then selling it later on so really although it costs more because it's sold on eventually (hopefully not at a larger loss than other cars) we would save anyway.

I guess the mileage we do is around 13,000 a year. It's more that we don't do any mileage for a fortnight and then suddenly we drive half way across the country due to work. We both work from home so the car is normally only used to pop to the shops or a meeting every few days.

High spec interior and comfortable whilst being as light on the maintenance/fuel as possible are the main points.

I quite like the look of the Auris Hybrid, but yes... that's me judging looks and having no clue about the car itself, it was very quiet though!

We took a VW Golf Bluemotion through France in the summer and it averaged 40mpg which I thought was pretty poor. I can get better than that out of her indoors' 14 year old 2 litre Scenic auto. I think it was a 1.4. It went quite well when you put your foot down though, which did surprise me. It was very small inside and we both commented that it was quite difficult to keep it straight on the motorway. It had a habit of wandering about by itself.

My friend had a 3 year old Merc Diesel estate and he gets 30mpg out of it, mainly motorway work. Again, nowhere near the amazing figures that are published.

Volvo S60 D5 would be something to look at, dont spend £10k on one though 6 or 7 should get a nice one. I average 45mpg in mine without a lot of motorway use, 50+ mpg is easy to achieve if a lot of mileage is motorway.

After owning a Fabia VRS I know what I would rather waft around in but still have a bit of poke when you need it.

330d and some change in case it goes wrong. Way higher mpg than your z4, comfortable, you obviously like bmws and still has plenty power when you need it

Yep or even an S80 if you want to go the full hog, and they are even cheaper than the S60 for some reason. I've seen 55 plate low miles S80s for around 5 grand. I personally think they are easliy as good if not better than anything BMW/Merc/Audi have to offer for the same money. I'm actually swaying towards saying that Volvo is right up there with the germans in terms of build quality, but then thats just based on my experience working on a variety of different cars.
I actually mot'd 2 old P reg Volvo's today, V70 T5 and a V40 1.8. The T5 sailed through, and the V40 only needed an arb link. Not bad for 130-140k 13-14 year old cars.
