Getting Old.

I remember my father in law, as he was in his early 50's, telling me that when he looked a the back of his hands (age spots and wrinkled skin) he thought they belonged to someone else. Of course there were other visible signs of him getting older but they were the things that were always seen by him and a reminder of his ageing.

Fast forward to the present, I'm now 58, and I noticed that my hands looked aged (no age spots tho) and getting wrinkly a few years ago. When I use my indoor cycle (back too bad to use a regular bike) if I glance down at my thighs as I pedal I think why are they looking baggy...? Where did the filling go...? I get the impression that I am a little like a balloon with a slow leak, as it goes down the skin remains that size and thus looks a little baggy or wrinkly.

I have a complete full head of hair, usually amounts of grey. I have never tried to grow a beard, doubt that I could, for it to look anything more than a tufty mess.
I remember growing up with a cousin who at 15 or so he needed to shave daily. He had a full dark growth and could have easily grown a full and thick beard. Over the next few years he did just that, it seemed that has his hair on his head became less and less his facial hair grew more. IIRC he was quite bald by his early 20's.

If we're on about age related faults has anyone mentioned dew drops ?

You think you've emptied the bladder, gave it a shake or two and put the python back in
indoors and presto hey, you still got a drop or two up the spout and a wet patch on the boxers.

you got that to look forward to guys

Is "getting old" the reason I'm constantly having to clear the back of my throat these days? I often feel like I'm choking on phlegm (lovely, I know). Why the heck am I producing so much of the damn stuff?

It can't get much worse and I've got ~50% of my expected lifespan yet to come...

Welcome to the club, maybe 4 years back, I developed the constant need to cough, and after a while, then ensued gobs of mucus, rising from my chest or lungs I assumed.
My G.P., after listening all over with his stethoscope, sent me to the Chest Clinic at St. Thomas’s Hospital, Waterloo, they gave me 2 X-Rays and and an MRI scan, and asked me to bring mucus samples to the Clinic for 3 days in a row, this was no big deal, the Hospital was maybe 25-30 minutes from my house.
When I returned to the Clinic 3 months later, the specialist said, “There is nothing in your lungs but air, no growths, nothing abnormal, and all your mucus samples came back negative, no signs of infection.” (phew, thank Christ).
“Keep using the the inhaler twice per day, and nose drops once per day, maybe they’ll bring it under control.”
They did, for about 10 months, then the irritation at the back of the throat started again, the only way to ease it was to cough, and sure enough, back came the phlegm/mucus.
I returned to my G.P., away he went with the stethoscope again, “All okay to me Jean, I’ll get you another visit to the Chest Clinic, but by looking at your notes, the specialist was happy with you, he’s probably going to say that it’s just aging, like liver spots, wrinkles, and thinning hair, a thing that some but not all will experience, stop having birthdays.”
Doesn’t make me any happier that I have to go out with gazillions of tissues, spit into them, then put them in a plastic bag and seek a trash can.

Getting older sucks. I'm 51 now and in no real order the things that irritate me are:

Aches and pains
Feeling tired and lethargic
Realising that I am having to try harder just to stay at the same level at sports
Eyesight, needing a second pair of reading glasses in addition to a pair of varifocals
Repeating myself

ur avin a laff - old at 51 - what have you been doing with yourself - I have over 20 yrs on you and I did 40 yrs on a outside job doing physical graft for most of it - OK my lower back aches and Mr Arther Writus is starting to pop it's head up but good god old at 51. You have seen nothing yet.:rolleyes:

Roland -- That is why I carry a spare pair of kecks and Jeans in my car. - Why does it always feel cold :D

@DXP55 it’s just genetics. That’s why you get 90 year olds who can still jog along and 60 year olds who are bed bound even though both kept themselves active throughout their previous years.

51 is old if you have family history of people dying in their 50’s and 60’s.

^^^^^ lifestyle choices, and other factors, contribute to that.

Without overly lamenting about the choices I made in the past I do wish that I hadn't have trained for so many years with such heavy weights that I did. After several back operations, both elbows not good and a very much knackered left knee, pumping iron hasn't been too kind to me at all.

I gotta hope that last line is a typo for bald, or we’re all going to think that the men in your family were shy and retiring, and hid under the stairs during the blitz, and waited to be called up, rather than rush to rally round the flag.

a friends sister is 51 and she is an utter babe.....51 is not old

I take your point - no, 51 is not 'old' but it feels like it when I can still remember being 25 when everything just 'worked' better. I can still play tennis, paramotor etc. I appreciate the comments :-)

Its also down to things like weight though how many 80+ do you see who are overweight? My great grandfather lived to be 92 and was as thin as a rake. The seriously obese are lucky make it into their 50's their heart usually gives out.

Well yeah, being overweight is an obvious issue if you want to live a long life. The evidence is overwhelming for that.

I didn’t really get the point across in my post but it was that you can have 2 people of similar age, height, weight, diet and activity levels who’ll die decades apart due to genetics. If nobody in your family history has lived to 90 on either side, then it’s very unlikely you ever would.

Some families just have vastly better cardiovascular systems, immune systems and less chance for gene mutation etc.
