Getting out of this hard drive mess

I seem to have a small (or big) mess with my desktop computers (samsung spinpoint F1 500GB) hard drive when I booted it up yesterday and when it got into windows I heard some loud clicks (the ones I normally hear (but not as quickly in this instance) when the system is powering up) for a few seconds (and it sounded like it was spinning up and down during that process, but my memory of what happened might be a bit cloudy) and went back to normal operation (and normal loading) with a check of the event viewer telling me that the hard drive has a bad block.

Now it is still working (I posted this on it), but I would rather do something about any impending failure sooner rather then later and I'm considering the following options...

1. Buy a new hard drive, clone the OS from the current drive to the new one and carry on.

2. Buy a new hard drive, plug it in as a secondary drive and copy all critical data over to it and carry on until the main hard drive gives out.

3. Same as 2, but instead of waiting for the end of the samsung get a SSD, an additional hard drive to act as a drive for programmes and such and a copy of windows 7 pro (for compatibility) to replace the existing OS when the funds are available again.

So, am I overreacting with this sudden blip and of course what of my plans should I go for.

grab a 512gb ssd and clone your hdd to it

keep hdd as backup or replace further down the line?

remember to do the reg tweak to enable ahci drivers after you've cloned if original install was in ide mode

(you can also use magic jellybean software to recover your windows key beforehand) it usually needs re activating after ssd/hdd swap/clone

From what I've heard, it takes a lot of work to get windows XP working properly with an SSD and I don't want to be banging my head against a brick wall trying to get it to work without any problems which is why I didn't decide to do that in any of my plans (plus I don't have a magic hole I can use to conjure the extra £100+ I need for a 500GB+ SSD) and is also why option 3 includes a new OS since XP is no longer generally supported.

The initial part of the plan involved getting a seagate 1TB HDD so if I went for the drive cloning option I can at least use their disc cloning software (since only one drive has to be a seagate) to clone to it from the samsung.
